Challenge Stadium, the home of Western Australia’s sporting elite was invaded by the not so regimented loved, drugged & boozed up young ones in their skimpy Supre chic. The next generation of electro jocks ready to throw off their shirts in glorious musical ecstasy purchased glow sticks and hot dogs at the front of the venue while others hustled in substances beneath their hoodies.

An earlier timeslot meant that before 8:30 the first support Canyons had already played and The Bag Raiders were already humping their keyboards.

Playing their new track Shooting Stars gained early movement from the standing section. Encircled by lines of unyielding security guards the tiered seating and dance floor were separated in an attempt to prevent mass moshing, or its dance equivalent.

Turbo Love rounded out the support slot having warmed the thrilled teens on the barrier and given a good showing for the chaperones and grown-ups.

The first date on a national tour The Presets have called in various musical favours along the way. While Canyons and The Bag Raiders entertained in Perth, Wolf & Cub, Architecture In Helsinki and Van She will be supporting in other capitols. So much has their popularity increased from alternative music stations and clubs to commercial radio and music festivals they have also gained a legion of new fans with varied tastes, attitudes and backgrounds.

With the dimming of lights the bouncers braced for the flood of minors about to descend from the tiered seating in an unbridled attempt to penetrate the dance floor. A pre-recorded intro began and after a good minute of caned fog and flashing tube lighting Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes took up their positions at synthesiser and drums and smashed their way through Talk Like That.

Yippiyo-Ay followed sealing the night as an electro extravaganza. With only a xylophone and several percussion instruments on stage to assist in the creation of The Presets sound a lot of pre-recorded and looped effects were used as well as mics tweaked to produce a variety of distortion.

As a dance outfit their two man set up can fill clubs and stadiums without the requirement of session musicians which could only detract from their energetic and clear vision of beats and harmonies.

Girl And The Sea took the set back to the days of debut album Beams when many of the crowd were probably still listening to Hillary Duff.

If I Know You raised the temperature yet again before a buildup of anticipation to play Are You The One lifted until it was suspended off the rafters. But they weren’t about to play it straight. Four verses in, the question was hardly raised. When the chorus did hit it was submerged in blistering electro shock laser sounds.

This Boy’s In Love, Beat On Beat Off, Kicking and Screaming and a ravenous My People finished up the set with Hamilton coming out from behind his instrument to aggress the audience in his charismatic yet menacing way.

A continual call and stomp for encore delivered the duo back onto stage to perform a dance orientated finishing set with Moyes joining Hamilton at the synth decks for Anywhere.

Spilling out into car parks, hockey fields and into the cars of waiting parents the youth of Perth were delighted with their first taste of the musical evolution awaiting them in their late teens.
