In the time I have been writing gig reviews I have tried to steer clear of any band that have the capacity to make me loose my senses allowing only love gush to spew out of my mouth when writing an article on said performance. Sentences like ‘Oh my God, I tootally met them afterward the gig and they signed my shirt’ are words that should only be followed by social humiliation, instead of a review on Fasterlouder.

However after seeing Matt and Kim live I have been scarily transported back to my 12 year old days when screaming till you lost your voice was perfectly acceptable…

The Evelyn was pack to the rafters with what seemed to be the entire population of first year uni students. However old I felt the feeling quickly diminished after the tunes began to play and I was infected by and innate feeling of invincibility.

Matt and Kim are best described as a punk/ dance duo from Brooklyn, New York who have a sound so electric it sends Indie kids into what could only be describe as movement that mimicked Tourettes syndrome, often fast, violent and erratic enough to make any sane adult cower in the nearest corner for safety reasons.

The stage at the Evelyn was disappointingly low for the performance. Matt appeared to be a jack in the box, bouncing up and down sporadically above the crowd and Kim was never to be seen, just a voice from above and beyond expelling comical genius in between songs. That however was no hindrance for the kids that crowd surfed, mounted each others shoulders and jumped wildly up and down while pressing their camera faster than a maniac with a machine gun all in the hopes to solidify that memory which would later be tagged on Facebook.

Matt and Kim interacted with the crowd, telling little anecdotes of their travels (according to Kim the swine flu is in fact government experiment gone wrong and now zombies are terrorising the world!!!) and gushing over how large the fan base was in Melbourne. Matt and Kim played from their both 2009 album Grand and their self titled debut album which included song such as, Daylight, Silver Tiles, a short song about Kim’s tight arse and my favourite Yea Yeah to which the lights were dimmed and we were encouraged to dances like freaks – though we barely needed any encouragement.

Matt and Kim are a force to be reckoned with their simple style, catchy lyrics and on stage banter making them have what Simon Colwell would call the X factor.

Matt and Kim are gallivanting around our country so if you can get to see them …do! I don’t care how you get there hitch hike, buy a plane ticket, sell a kidney this is a band that are worth the trouble. Matt and Kim ended the show with the promise of a dance party… my only criticism is that they never showed…so if you out there call me, email me, Myspace me, both your names are on my dance card…So you owe me!
