This show would be the last The Grates would play in the wake of their most recent release Teeth Lost, Hearts Won. So naturally, if you were a fan of this release you would, or should have made it along. The newly opened The Hi Fi had not yet really been tested with a good ol’ party, and The Grates with their fans were sure to rock the newly painted walls.
First up were the dynamite duo DZ. Lets be honest, these boys have a big big sound for a two piece. Dirty bass lines, hooky drum beats, and screamy lyrics drenched with a tasty grungy feel. Pulling a number of great supports over past months, if they have not already done so these boys are sure to gather a following. In saying this, most of the audience seemed new to this act, but looked intrigued enough to offer some sober head nodding. DZ smashed out a set that hit like a sucker punch to the face, filled with a ton of songs you could probably mosh too. Their set was well worth an early attendance, and remember if you haven’t seen these two menacing rockers before, they are locals so you should be able to catch them sometime relatively soon.
Up next were Melbourne’s Children Collide. It has been a while since this reviewer has been to a gig were a support act has been so well received by an audience; many of whom were singing along with much of Collide’s set. With each new track a really good energy seemed to be building in the room; people were enjoying themselves. A great sing-a-long occurred when CC’s single Farewell Rocketship came through the PA. A well rounded performance and a fine opener for the headliners.
The audience had just digested two rather meaty entrees, and as the curtains opened, and The Grates walked out on stage the audience’s reaction translated to “stuff it, lets skip straight to dessert”. It became clear why this show was a sell out, the people love The Grates, and The Grates love the people.
Ah and yes we were all interested to see what getup the bands frontlady Patience Hodgson would come out wearing, and this evening she was sporting a rather tasteful cowgirl look, which complemented the mini coyote mountain and cacti props on stage.
Punters were jumping and jiving all over the place, Hodgson and Co sure know how to put on a party. Patience took every opportunity to chat with the crowd, coming across as genuinely engaged, and interested in her adoring fans. They played a heap of their singles, Burn Bridges, Aw Yeah and Carve Yes Name to list a few. A really enjoyable night, The Grates have gained yet another fan.
