Hits, The Vaginabillies andmore @ Clarence Corner Hotel,Brisbane (25/04/09)
Mon 27th Apr, 2009 in Gig Reviews
An energetic and creative evening at The Clarence was opened by an uniquely interesting band, Lobster Prophet. Salmon Preacher and Tropical Acceleration were obvious crowd favourites. Loaded with captivating lyrics and a demanding psychedelic rock sound, they controlled the crowd from start to finish. Their music truly reflects their environment, being as energetic, vicious and turbulent as the coasts that bookend this fine city.
The Pretty Boys continued the raucous pace of the evening and were anything but passive. Sets were tight and fast-fused with a confident all-female stage presence that absolutely kicked ass! These chicks exhibited behaviours often equated with being pre-menstrual, but it was clear they were just exercising their passion for true rock and roll. Their songs exuded all facets of life, especially jagged hearts and tainted dreams. Hanny, Lisa and Julie are one’s to watch as their power and stage presence develops with a zing that would blow your grandma’s undies off.
It was a delight to be in the presence of The Vaginabillies. With a lagerphone wielding band member donning a dress on stage; their set was bright, entertaining and musically stupendous. The Vaginabillies played original songs Hot Monkeywoman and Welcome to Brisbane that really got the crowd revved up and motivated. To commemorate the weekends activities they also played The Last Post in respect for our fallen heroes.
The last band of the evening was my personal favourite, Hits. This band is consistently suave and provoking when on stage. With customary stage antics the delightful and effervescent team demanded the attention of the crowd. The set consisted of a combination of new and older songs. These were all delivered with a definite punch. Hits assaulted the ears and hearts of all present and I’m sure everyone present left with a satisfied grin.
