What can I say but lookout boys and girls, Machine Gun Fellatio are back on the road!
First up were The Erics who looked as cool as they sounded, indie-pop with psychedelic edges but modern and raw, they instantly accumulated a small fanclub bopping at the front of the stage and plenty of onlookers nodding appreciatively. Near the end the singer popped offstage and was promptly mauled by enthusiastic fans. Keep an eye out for The Erics.
By contrast theredsunband were so cool they were ice statues. They sounded great but their stylish lack of animation quickly became dull. The drummer’s fascination with superfluous drum rolls irked me but they did provide a quality soundtrack to the beer queues and conversations outside. Maybe I just didn’t get “it” but I suspect they’re worth investigating anyway.
Eventually I noticed that everyone was drifting back inside, the twin projectors were displaying some kinda porn movie. It looked like a collection of music clips too indecent for TV. This could mean only one thing: Machine Gun Fellatio was about to start! By now the bar was jam packed to capacity and full of students gawking at the grossly indecent display of boobs, fornication, freaks and smut. And strangely compelling it was.
The music builds and the band struts out. Suddenly the crowd realises they’re in for a great show, ChitChat announces that it’s time to flirt and indeed, it would seem he is right! Launching right into the show with a couple of hits, the crowd is mesmerised and joyously sings along.
Pinky at one point announced that nobody came to their first show last night so this was the first “real” gig of the new tour. I think most people were shocked, this was clearly a band a cut above the rest. Their new singer initially looked a bit lost but Pinky introduced her as “Beyonce” and she pulled off a song all by herself and won the crowd’s adoration. An extra dancing girl graced the stage periodically in cheeky garb and flirted with the band, LoveShark providing some equally cheeky humour with the all the grace of a dirty grandpa.
I’m not entirely familiar with their songs but the new material stood up well with the old, the new single What The Fcuk was a highlight of the show. The band was surprisingly tight considering how animated the show is and the fact that it was their first gig back (ok, second gig). It didn’t rely on boobs or shock factor like it used to, it was a performance by a band in full mastery of the stage.
Nonetheless after two encores it was time to go home and shag like an absolute machine, this band tends to make you very randy. I suspect several hundred people did the same.
A performance to be remembered for some time.
