On a grotty back alley that attracts the more perverse and sordid of night time activities a narrow doorway comes into focus flanked by security and exiled smokers.

The night’s bill consists of two local outfits willing to take on the challenge of carrying amps and instruments up the steep cement staircase.

The experimental folk of Carbuncle and indi rock of The Silents graced the corner stage paving the way for live music and DJ sets to draw punters with a hunger for alternatives into this establishment of debauchery.

Known by appointment only as The Penthouse, home to Collars and Cuffs “Perth’s leading All Male Revue Cabaret Show ” the venue has undergone several name changes but not much else in terms of a refresh.

Launched as Barmania, and still carrying the insignia on the door stamp, The Republic has the edge over other bars in the area for its uniqueness of appeal with remnants of 90s hairspray and images of baby oiled Chippendales. Hoseable vinyl booths and bar tables with expander straps sets the scene sending the mind’s imagination running wild.

Implements and equipment located in the strangest positions and stripper poles invite bar goers to enact their own sticky sweaty night. Grinding and cavorting without a tap on the shoulder from security is one charming aspect in this world of public liability.

Carrying a bar to satisfy hordes of hens the prices and drink types are stuck onto the mirrored walls and multiple mixing and slushy machines. Light on with the choice of beer, and serving practices that vary in pours from stiff to weak, the prices aren’t the most accommodating.

With more live music on the way, relieving yourself of various bodily discharges, doing a sexy dance and drinking a spritzer could become the uprising this conservative commonwealth city will find liberating at The Republic on a Friday night.
