Kings Of Leon rocked The Drive!

This would have to be one of the mostly hotly anticipated gigs for quite some time with tickets selling out in a heartbeat and the chart topping album and singles increasing expectations even further.

Did they disappoint? In short no way! There would have been few punters that would have left disappointed after what they had witnessed with a great set list taking in all four albums, great sound and perfect weather for an outdoor concert at Memorial Drive.

Some reviews have been quick to point out that they were flat, which is total bollocks because after six months of constant touring they are gig hardened and know how to feed off the energy of the ten thousand strong crowd. Some fans may have jumped on with the success of Sex On Fire and Use Somebody but the majority were in fine voice and knew the Kings Of Leon back catalogue quite well.

Once the lights fell at a quarter to nine the excitement was fever pitch as Caleb, Matthew, Nathan and Jared hit the stage to kick things off with Crawl. Kings Of Leon aren’t renowned for the interaction with the crowd letting the music do all the talking with Taper Girl, My Party, Molly’s Chambers and King Of The Rodeo rocking by before front man Caleb Followill said “Hi… We’re Kings Of Leon.”

The staging was massive and so to was the light show even featuring some old home movies, which made quite the backdrop during King Of The Rodeo. Big cheers were reserved for Sex On Fire after Caleb introduced as saying “this is a new one, we haven’t played it much – can you help us out?” If there was a roof it would have been lifted as it sent the crowd in to overdrive.

There were some really great moments with Revelry, Milk, Four Kicks and a hark back to their debut album with Wasted Time. It didn’t end there either with The Bucket and On Call following not long after. Even at this point I was thinking how many more hits were left in the can? A few more from the first album would have been nice but it is clear that the band has moved on quite a way since then.

Use Somebody would be my favourite song from Only By The Night, which sent the crowd in to hyper drive again. I thought it seemed quite humbling when front man Caleb was talking about playing in front of massive crowds and how much they love it after a slow rise to the top. There’s no doubt that the hard work has paid off and the spoils that come with that are well deserved.

The main set closed out with Cold Desert and Slow Night So Long before returning for an encore. Songs from Because Of Times featured prominently with the Kings finishing in a blaze of glory.

It was a great night and well worth the asking price if you ask me. Kudos must go to the openers The Stills who would have done more than win over a few new fans.

I’m sure it won’t take long for the Kings Of Leon to make a return visit.
