The Inhertitors did a fine job of starting the evening to the enthusiastic crowd keen to get to the ANU Bar early to catch the entire show. Their melodic blend of pop, indie and blues went down reasonably well with the crowd considering they were anticipating the rocking mosh tunes of Behind Crimison Eyes and Something With Numbers (SWN).
The spunky rock gods of Behind Crimson Eyes hit the audience with a deafening blow with their hard core rock, playing the favourites You’ve Had Your Chance and Shakedown. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to get a tatoo all the way up your forearm, especially after the rush we all got from the lengthy drum solo played at lightening speed and all accomplished without a shirt on, m-mmm.
The youthful audience moshed hard at the front with plenty of old time fans reminiscing with the boys as they played tunes from the back catalogue. The newer material was also well received as the new single Fighting For Our Lives in no way stopped the dancing. Looking extra punk ass for the evening was one dedicated fan moshing in a rubber full-face and head mask with an orange mo hawk. No doubt pools of sweat were forming under his eyes.
The temperature rose as the set continued. Front man Josh cooled the stage down with water sprayed from his mouth, illuminated by the purple lights and timed with drums and guitars exploding into the next track.
Following a brilliantly energised performance, the crowd was well and truly hyped for Something With Numbers . No one moved from the front of the stage in anticipation for another rocking performance and no one was disappointed. While not the most attractive man in the world, Jake Grigg is certainly an attractive performer. From the moment they hit the stage he was moving jerkily to the brilliant sounds of his men. Sporting one of the most ugly looking shirts that Jake makes look retro cool, he engaged the audience not only with his presence but with conversation, praising the audience for the good time he was having.
Probably not the best advertisement for an anti-binge drinking campaign, Jake with the help of his mates on stage skulled at least two beers during the set though there is no doubt he had a few more before he got on stage.
SWN played a wicked set filled with their amazingly infectous tracks. Now I don’t need to tell you how the audience handled Apple of the Eye. The song that everyone goes bananas to at Bar 32 made the crowd go mental. In fact, everyone went mental the entire set. There was no stopping the moshing, the clapping, the dancing, the jumping, and the sing alongs. No stopping in fact because SWN did the most wonderful thing that a band could do – they didn’t waste time with an encore. They just played straight through finishing with Stay With Me Bright Eyes. The crowd were relentless in their enjoyment of the set and went home thoroughly exhausted but well exercised for the evening.
