A good turn out for a good line up at the Troubadour on Saturday night, an evening that would prove to give a little more than most were expecting, from the supports at least.

First up on the bill was Philadelphia Grand Jury. With a few tricks and treasures up their sleeves, they threw everyone straight into a rocky high impact set. These guys have a great energy on stage, infecting punters with the urge to move, and even enticing a few ladies to screaming; no doubt friends but still added to the mood.

Philadelphia delivered a great pop rock sound throughout their set; it was the kind of music you can party to. Standing rather close to the action, this reviewer could feel the floor boards bouncing with the dancing punters, a sure sign of a good show at the troubadour.

Some rather quirky extras where added to the set to make it more like a show, such as pre-recorded small talk, played between songs through the PA, and a rather theatrical finish in which the band trashed the stage, just a little. Good band, they will be back on the 10th of April at Valley Studios.

Local lass led outfit Little Scout played with just a little more energy tonight than what is usual for them. This reviewer has seen them perform a few times before, and is of the opinion that they work better within on a more relaxed, acoustic line-up. But know one could blame them for adopting the electric vibe left on the stage by the opening act. Some suggested that maybe Little Scout should have been first on the bill, but this aside they showed dynamic and played their set in party mode, people kept dancing. This was also the last show in Brisbane for the bands Keyboardist Kristy Tickle who is soon to be replaced by someone known only to me as “Laura M”, stay tuned.

Headliners Belles Will Ring also know how to put on a good show, sticking to the format of a classic genre and some strong showmanship. Sharp drumming, weaving melodies and tasty harmonies earnt Belles a good response from the punters. There must be something in the water up in the Blue Mountains, because these boys aren’t the only decent rendition of brit pop music venturing onto the circuit at the moment from this area. Check out Cloud Control for something similar. Yes these guys are good, but they didn’t really do anything unexpected. So if you enjoy your brit pop format, check out their current release Broader than Broadway.
