Friday night starts out with I Heart Hiroshima. Two drunk diehard fans in the front row will more than make up for the lack of enthusiasm from the rest of the crowd for their set. The lack of bass was more than supplemented by the fact that Susie Pattens bass drum was microphoned into the rafters. The tiniest of drum kits, coupled with striking force and talent was a nice appendage to their indie pop tunes. Stage wise it is probably not the most professional display from the trio but a mid song change wasn’t a total shambles to the whole set. Songs including Code Blue and the popular Punks saw seated bodies swaying in time. What was described as the trios last set before they go into the studio to record their new album left the crowd with a growing anticipation.
Opening with Everything Is Borrowed saw the once seated patrons moving along to Mike Skinners British hip-hop rhythm. It was a respectable sized set including Don’t Mug Yourself, When You Wasn’t Famous, Heaven For The Weather, Blinded by the Lights and Fit But You Know It. First song Mike Skinner comes out and asks a kid at the front whom was over-excited at the whole situation if he was ok. Respect to you Mike Skinner. As the people inside danced along and the temperature inside the Tivoli rose to match that of the humid night outside, one person decided to get naked and hop onto friends shoulders. My eyes are still burning.
It wasn’t exactly The Streets on stage but Kevin Mark Trail was in tow backing up Mike Skinner everywhere on stage. Naked bodies and a rising temperature saw Mike Skinner lose his shirt and despite a cute face, the mans stomach could use a rowing machine and the eyeful of his ass that was bestowed upon the crowd was enough to turn the strongest stomach. Good entertainment value though. “When you hear the piano, I want you go LOW” Mike instructs. After a failed attempt first, every single body inside the Tivoli was crouched on the floor. Then in-sync, one giant leap and the crowd is back to dancing the evening away. Mike Skinner ran all around the venue that evening, rallying people to get moving. One minute there I was with my pen on paper minding my own business, next thing I look up and I have Skinner all up in my face telling me not to mug myself yo.
All in all it was a great evening of entertainment and yes Mike, those are mighty cool shoes.
