Last Friday night Canberra was collectively sick of being cooped up at home in front of the old air-con and decided to venture to two of Canberra’s hottest venues (literally and figuratively), Transit Bar and Bar 32 for the old indie night face off!
At Transit Bar, the now infamous party starters Purple Sneaker DJs were in fine form with their renown mix of upbeat electro/dance/indie music. This time around Purple Sneakers brought a select handful of their best DJs who were able to dust off their tricks twice over the evening, performing double sets including Walkie Talkie, Ph DJ and M.I.T. Being sure to please every punter each DJ showcased their own special blend of impromptu dance and electronica. DJ Talihina Stan blended hip hop/R&B and electronica which worked a treat for those who felt like shaking their boogie.
If hip-hop wasn’t your particular attire than Total Mind Fuck came along at 10:30 with a selection of indie and classic rock to bounce along to. His set-list included the likes of The Grates, Queens of the Stone Age and Children Collide. DJ Alistair was also on stage for a lot of Total’s set acting as an MC by energising and enthusing the crowd.
Meanwhile at Bar 32 Friday nights weekly dance/indie/alternative extravaganza was on show to the elite of true alternative and electro punters who have climatised and adjusted to Bar 32’s small, humid, ‘anything goes’ atmosphere. The regular and much loved artists were on high rotation including MGMT, The Presets, Kings of Leon and Birds of Tokyo, (basically anything that was on the recent Hottest 100).
Starting out quiet the bar picked up by 11ish with the usual indie crowd swilling in, emersing themselves on the dance floor “dancing”
along to rock favs old and new including Little Red, Beastie Boys, No Doubt and NIN. Upstairs opened after 12 when local DJs started unravelling their skills and to the joy of many access to the one and only air-con in the hot house.
Back at Transit, the Purple Sneakers crew continued to mesmerise the crowd with many impressed by the DJ’s superior mixing skills. The winner? Well it’s hard to pick, but this Friday in the indie club war, the Purple Sneakers DJ’s take the cake with the kids dancing the night away ‘till 5am!
At FasterLouder we can’t wait for next months visit from the Sydney DJ stars.
