Bleeding Through @ TheGovernor Hindmarsh, Adelaide(25/01/09)
Wed 28th Jan, 2009 in Gig Reviews
The calibre of bands playing at The Gov tonight was evident with a large crowd gathering before the doors had opened, all eagerly awaiting the huge night of night blast beats and break downs.
Having done their sound check before the doors opened, In Trenches took to the stage without a fuss. The band consists of singer Ben Coyte, who used to front Day Of Contempt and guitarist Kevin Cameron formerly of I Killed the Prom Queen. The strain and passion of Coyte vocals and Cameron’s crunching guitar, combined with their respective backgrounds, sees In Trenches with a matured and evolved sound for such a new band. Unfortunately tonight they had a bass heavy mix, which ruined the more thoughtful and delicate moments that In Trenches have woven into their otherwise heavy sound. The band do however provide a genuine alternative to the now almost exclusively metal orientated brand hardcore.
As Blood Runs Black from California, played a fairly stock standard set of death-core, more bark than bite. While it wasn’t the most awe-inspiring set, the band were enjoying the crowds enthusiasm with plenty of punters joining the in on the circle pit.
North Carolina, the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola and Between the Buried and Me. Unlike the drink, BTBAM sound is not sickly sweet nor does it go flat after a few minutes. They have managed to keep that brutal quality that has seen metalcore become so dominant while venturing further out into prog metal territory. All of which makes for entertaining live music. BTBAM contorted their way through songs that averaged on six minutes and leaving the crowd mesmerised after an epic set.
On their first headlining visit to Adelaide, Bleeding Through delivered an intense performance that has set a standard for the year of gigs to come. The set was peppered with samples and synth interludes between songs. Halfway through the set, singer Brandan Schieppati took some time out to tell the crowd that after seventeen dates in Australia it felt good having another tour under their belt. He thanked the crowd for their continued support that has kept the band going for nearly ten years. Former I Killed The Prom Queen main man and ex-Adelaide boy Jona Weinhofen was re-introduced to his home crowd, to a roaring applause. It was the first time Wienhofen had been on an Adelaide stage since his final IKTPQ show at The Gov last year. It was a case of mission accomplished when the band left the stage.
