It was beard nirvana as Adelaide came together in a celebration of all things beards at the * Governor Hindmarsh* to help local band The Beards prepare for their trip to Alaska to play at the opening ceremony of the World Beard and Moustache Championships.

Assisting the Beards prepare were fellow bearded bards Jackson Firebird, God God Dammit Dammit, and Bolty Bolt-Bolt and The Boltons.

Bolty Bolt-Bolt and the Boltons are, as it may be obvious, a tribute band to Michael Bolton and in true Bolton style these guys put their heart and soul into the performance. By the time they got to How can we be lovers if we can’t be friends, complete with lead vocalist Joel Bolton ripping his shirt open, they had every girl in the room going weak at the knees.

Next up were Mildura boys and almost locals these days, Jackson Firebird who are seriously a band to watch.

I first witnessed the Firebird phenomenon in Broken Hill late last year and have to say they are quite possibly one of my musical highlights of 2008. You have to give props to a band that can make music from a ‘bottle bin’ and live this two-piece is pure rock energy – and they give great beard.

But too much beard was still not enough and local band God God Dammit Dammit are a 13 piece bearded and self described punk funk outfit who pretty much like to party and raise hell and they were a perfect fit for such bearded carousing.

But it was really the night of The Beards and by the time they took to the stage to spread the prophecy of the beard, the crowd was suitably lubricated and ready to bow down at the alter of the beard.
For those uninitiated to the wonders of the Beards, this four piece only sing about beards and having beards and the crowd were not afraid to show their appreciation when they played favourites Beard Revolution and No Beard, No Good.

But don’t despair if you missed out on their Australian team launch because there are still plenty of opportunities to help the bearded cause before the Championships in May. And by not only performing but also competing for Australia at the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Alaska it may just mean that the Beards might in fact achieve their goal of world beard domination.
