Epicure @ The Transit Bar,Canberra (08/01/09)
Sat 10th Jan, 2009 in Gig Reviews
It was a chilly start to a Thursday night in the capital but it was warmed up considerably by the presence of Ballarat boys Epicure, rocking the stage at the newly refurbished Transit Bar.
Early arrivals were greeted with the sight of Epicure sound checking, giving them a taste of what was in store later in the night. Epicure attracted a diverse crowd to the Transit Bar from the young to the young at heart, Epicure living up to their reputation with their haunted sound and *Juan Alban*s clever lyrics. The bar going on two-thirds full, the band succeeded in pulling the crowd numbers for a Thursday night.
Sound check complete it was then up to Transit DJ, DJ Smish, to pump the crowd and get them to the dance floor, which was not hard as his talent and song choice kept the punters hitting the floorboards. Later DJ Smish continued to delight the crowd into the wee small hours of the morning.
In anticipation, the crowd began to stand and moved forward as Epicure took to the stage. No one went home disappointed as they played all the favourites and more – the ethereal Tightrope Walker to the darker Armies Against Me to crowd favourite Cobra Kisses, they played a seamless set to a transfixed audience. Snakes and Foxes from their new album Postcards from a Ghost was also well received. This performance was perfect although was still plagued with its technical difficulties but they were ironed out very early in the set. Alban with his eyes closed and statuesque like stance, the crowd surrendered to his voice and moved with the sound that is Epicure.
Alban thanked everyone for the fantastic support Canberra has given them as they would not be enjoying the success they have without their committed, loyal fans.
I am sure fans wont have to wait to long before Epicure return to the Canberra. Epicure has always been welcomed with open arms to our lovely city and we cannot wait for their return.
