The Fauves @ The AnnandaleHotel, Sydney (19/12/08)
Tue 23rd Dec, 2008 in Gig Reviews
It was cold, unsettling and clearly a night best spent at home. For all the daredevils keen to weather the elements, The Annandale was the place to be.
The electro acoustic act Sierra Finn took to the stage in support of their EP Shake Stare Sleep. Vocalist Russ shuffled between guitar and keyboards as he sang dream numbers Been Sleeping and Blue Day Sun. Spirits escalated as the night ended on Wrapped In Pastic, with Russ showing off some lovely finger work on keyboards, completed by some trampling on foot that appeared as fun as it sounded. The music was reminiscent of Muse and the band did well building up the crowd and the body warmth.
Main act The Fauves took to the stage, with a warm response from the crowd. The keyboards and bass lent to a funky beat, as vocalist Andrew Cox and co. launched into Give Up Your Day Job. There was lots of interaction going on as Cox and bassist Timothy Cleaver threw in some jokes and anecdotes that added to a lively evening.
Formed 20 years ago, The Fauves released their ninth album When Good Times Go Good earlier this year. New songs Love Radar and Between You and the Dance Troupe translated well live alongside oldies like Surf City Limits. The balanced mix of singing, conversation and mini instrumentals made for great variety. A jovial time was had by all, with the cold outside the furthest thing from our minds.
