It was a night for the big bands at Transit Bar on Saturday night when Kid Confucius came to town. They brought along with them fellow Sydney-siders Lions At Your Door for a night of toe-tapping, thigh-slapping fun!
Channelling Operator Please fused with the Grates these kids lit up Transit bar with their first track the theme song, self-titled Lions At Your Door. In an outburst of tambourine, crazy guitars and frenzied keyboards they managed to get the slightly thin crowd up on their feet. Although LAYD let out a fierce sound, the acoustics in the Transit Bar just didn’t do them justice and their sound guy failed them miserably through the middle of their set when the mix became all wrong allowing the feedback to overpower their musical goodness.
For this young 6-piece it was only their second time in Canberra and it was encouraging to see the guys from Kid Confucius further endorsing their support act. They set a really good example for the crowd having most members of the band down in front and centre.
Next it was Kid C’s turn up on stage for the skinny jeans show, it never ceases to amaze that anyone can fit into jeans that tight. Here on a promotional tour for their new album The Let Go, from their opening track Curiosity Killer you could tell that this was music to make your mouth hurt (from smiling that is). Surveying the now almost crowded room, you could see that not a single person in the place could sit still.
They charged through the next few songs including Last Straw and Good Luck, they made it so hard to stop your feet from moving. It was energetic and dynamic and the honey-coated vocals of lead singer Rob Hezkial could make your mind melt.
They rocked out with their latest single Darling I Need Ya by getting the crowd to help them out with their “soul claps”. It was purely captivating to see the majority of the crowd with their hands in the air, feet pounding the floor and massive smiles on their faces.
It’s so hard to put these guys into any one category of music, they have such a unique sound – a mix of funk, soul and ska – Kid C have a great amount of talent and a charisma capable of mesmerizing an unsuspecting crowd.
Kid C finished up their set with Big Black Cloud with blasting horns that had everyone up on their feet. People standing at the bar were doing all they could do to resist the pull of the music because really, who can resist a good horns section. They were here to bring the funk and that’s certainly what they did. Music was filling the room and at one point it felt like the room was too small to contain their almighty sound.
Currently at the end of their national tour there are only a few opportunities left to get out and see Kid Confucius. If you’re in need of a night of dancing and fun, get yourself along to Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane over the next two weeks and grab yourself a ticket to their show. You are guaranteed to enjoy yourself!
