John Steel Singers, Cuthbertand The Nightwalkers, MajorMajor @ The Zoo, Brisbane(14/11/08)

Melbournians Major Major were first up at the Zoo on Saturday evening. Indie rock that busts out a little country in places was a fine way to start the evening. From country it smashed back into indie rock and it some songs were ripping off recognisable riffs hided through a slight tempo increase. Ain’t nothing like a free EP which was available for those with grubby mits to get their hands on (yes I was one of them). It surely was the little support band that could and did so well.

Next on stage were Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers. Mr Pickwicks Camera was the standout song of the evening on a night that was to be full of them. Their interesting yet somewhat disturbing rendition of what almost sounded like the chicken dance saw patrons doing the ridiculous dance that accompanies it all around the room. Patrons had almost packed out all the good positions within the Zoo while the large group of musicians released toe-tapping tunes upon patrons.

Finally on a long humid evening in Brisneyland, the John Steel Singers graced the stage. These six gentlemen are exactly that, gentlemen especially within their music. Songs from The Beagle and the Dove saw people skanking around the Zoo with disregard to anything. A few of the pearly new tracks from the EP In colours got a run on the evening to what could have been described as dismay to the people inside.

Rainbow Kraut, Evolution and the breakthrough single Strawberry Wine were impossible not to enjoy. Scott Bromiley is multi-talented and his vocals made it impossible not to sway along too along with the musical ability of Pete Bernoth. It was a solid performance from all three bands which is rare and left people waiting for next time such talent comes back together and back to town.
