Slipknot, Machine Head @Jubilee Pavilion, Adelaide(28/10/08)

Adelaide metal heads were out in force at the newly completed Jubilee Pavilion at the Wayville Showgrounds to see, the masked men of mayhem, Slipknot and along for the ride were fellow metallers Machine Head, who have stopped playing their own tours outside of the States, so for their fans this is good as they can get. As expected, playing their first shows since BDO 05, the crowd was huge, the excitement was fever pitch and thank god I wore a black t-shirt.
First up were Sydonia (I think, clearly they were a valued member of the bill as there was no reference to them on anything to do with the show) who got 20 mins as the doors opened. They did a pretty good job of keeping the crowd that gave a shit entertained, but I dont think many will rush out to buy their album.
Next up were the first of this metal double act Machine Head and holy shit can these guys turn it on. The lights went out and the Machine Fucking Head chant rang around the venue, when the guys hit stage the crowd erupted and for the next 50 mins the crowd witnessed one of the premier metal acts going around. The only down side was in a quest for loudness they lost a whole lot of quality in their sound, but they did achieved their loudness. Highlights of the set were Imperium, Aesthetics of Hate, Halo before finishing with Davidan.
Then it was time for Slipknot... The lights went out and the haunting sound of Iowa filled the air, then from the darkness appeared the masked men. Without wasting any time they flew straight into the classic Surfacing that went off with fireworks and as soon as Mick hit that first riff the massive crowd went fucking insane. There was no warming up on stage either with the Slipknot boys going nuts and it rubbed off on the crowd who gave it straight back. The Blister Exists followed, which again had the crowd giving plenty and the introduction of Chris and Clown on the strap on toms, followed by Get This and Before I Forget which had the crowd in great voice. Then it was time for every one to jump to Liberate followed by one of the many highlight songs Disaterpiece in which the crowd and on-stage antics went to another level.
With the new album only fresh in stores you would expect the set list to be dominated by songs from it, but this wasnt to be the case with only Dead Memories and Psychosocial, played consecutively, making the cut. With the new stuff out the way it was time, again, to delve back to the Iowa album and The Heretic Anthem which had the whole crowd claiming to be 666.Then it was back to the self titled for a song Corey said we wouldn’t hear live for a long time Prosthetics, Spit It Out and Only One to finish off the main set.
The boys returned for a short, but blistering encore of People = Shit and here comes the pain (Sic) which gave the crowd one last opportunity to go nuts and nuts they went.
The only disappointment came after reading reviews of the other shows on the tour to find that Adelaide (as usual) only got half the on stage production (No drum solo or hydraulic drum kit), but I shouldnt complain, at least they came.
