Little Scout were the first act, and lead singer Melissa sang through a cobweb of nerves to produce an occasional sweet melody, peppered with glaringly out -of-tune harmonies. It actually sounded better when Patrick took the lead vocals. Yawning oxygen into my brain didn’t help me stay awake for this set, but the airy, folky tunes would better suit a Byron Bay road trip…as long as you aren’t the one behind the wheel.
The audience waited patiently while The Holidays meticulously decorated the stage with glowsticks. It looked tacky at first but the end effect was kind of cool, I just hope they didn’t injure anyone when they proceeded to throw the sticks into the audience. Try hard much? The lead singer displayed some well rehearsed interaction with the audience, and got as good a response as can be expected from the zombie-like crowd. Their set list was tight, but all sounded like a continuation of the previous song. If Maroon 5 were an indie band they would sound like these guys and after a while, the pool game being played at the back became distractingly mesmerising and the flying glowsticks just weren’t enough to salvage my short attention span.
Finally Yves Klein Blue came on, and played around with the layering of their first song. They sounded quirky, that strange cross between punk and melodies….maybe intelligent punk? Hopes that the crowd would perk up at the headlining act were shot down as they remained disappointingly tame (with the exception of one enthusiastic dancing man). Even the couple dancing in the back couldn’t be arsed getting out of their chairs.
But the show featured the first decent guitar solo I’ve heard in months and when it was finally the keyboardist’s turn to shine, he outshined the flashing disco lights, so good on him. They finished with Silence is Distance from their EP Draw Attention to Themselves and the night somehow ended early, despite unnecessarily long set up times in between the acts.
