Playing a short opening set of no-frills garage blues are local two-piece Blackwater Fever. Having previously supported The Black Keys, the duo’s main influences are evident in their heady mix of raspy vocals, pounding drums and heavily distorted guitar riffs.

The Troubadour is gradually filling up as The Bell Divers take to the stage. Performing songs from their debut album June July, their folk-inflected indie pop is pleasant enough but largely fails to excite live, not helped by lead singer Clinton Toghill ’s somewhat monotonous voice. Single Fallen Down is a standout but the impatient, beery audience are here for the main act.

Melbourne’s The Fauves have long been one of Australia’s most underrated, as well as witty bands. Opening with Metrosexual, tonight’s set draws as much from the new album When Good Times Go Good as from the classics Future Spa and Lazy Highways, with trademark sharp riffs and priceless banter firmly in check. Hip-shaking Medium Pacer sounds as snappy as it did eight years ago, while 90s hits Self Abuser and Dogs Are The Best People are testament to the band’s knack for wicked power-pop tunes with wry lyrics. Cheered on for an encore, they respond with acerbic Celebrate The Failure and Give Up Your Day Job, Jagger-channelling frontman Andrew Cox as ever taking the piss. The Fauves are still kickin’ on.
