‘Now I’m here, and you’re here,’ is just a set of lyrics from the song Making A Fire by Sydney songstress, Holly Throsby. It is these simple yet striking words which could just about describe the pleasant sight of many faces who attended her show as apart of her A Loud Call Tour show last Thursday at ANU Bar.

Opening the show was a solo act all the way from Sweden. Unlike the name seemed to imply, The Tallest Man On Earth really was just some gorgeous small-skinny-guy. But it was this man’s folksy acoustics and bluesy vocals which brought much sense to the name. Blue Mountains awesome foursome Cloud Control lifted the mood afterwards playing some light-hearted folk which got the crowd dancing and singing delightfully.

There is something about Holly Throsby which is somewhat, magical? Perhaps somebody turned up the ventilation air just a bit more after the supporting acts? Or perhaps it was just sheer magic? The moment she strummed those first chords and sung out, it was like the wind was blowing inside.

She didn’t hesitate to introduce her band, mentioning that they’ve been with her for quite some time. The musical talents of The Hello Tigers (*Bree van Reyk* and Jens Birchall) just added to the exquisite music and sounds within in her recordings and her live peformances.

‘Do you guys like pop songs?’ Throsby asked her audience, quickly breaking in with, ‘Well, you’ve come to the wrong show.’ Instead Holly Throsby & The Hello Tigers played a combination of old and new songs. To name a few, Now I Love Someone, Would You?, A Widow’s Song, Things Between People, and Up With The Birds . All songs played from Throsby’s three albums ( A Loud Call, Under The Town and On Night ) possessed an honest, emotional, and strong bond with the audience.

Throsby even included a sweet rendition of You Am I’s Berlin Chair which was recently covered for Triple J’s like a version. She joked saying something like ‘After snorting cocaine, I turned to Tim [Rogers] and he asked me to cover his song.’ Her banter just seemed to be endless, only adding to her already much loved personality.

Wow-what-a-show-stunner!

Whether you worked the next morning or perhaps you didn’t. It’s in the past now… So, just ask yourself, ‘did Friday really have to be the end to your great week?’ If it was not a good day for you, why don’t you just break the rules? Let Holly Throsby and The Hello Tigers be the perfect excuse to end your week on a Thursday instead. Just this once.
