Adelaide get your fucking act together or quit complaining that we never get decent bands touring here.

The turn out at the Governor Hindmarsh to see the long awaited return of Brisbane’s The Rocketsmiths was appalling. And the excuse of Parklife or the AFL Grand Final taking place the next day doesn’t cut it. If we want bands to not pass Adelaide over on their way to Perth we need to get off the fucking couch and support live music.

Now lecture over, those that did bother to turn up were not disappointed by the latest serving of Craving Music? which as well as the Rocketsmiths included local Adelaide bands, Zeta, The Battery Kids and The Shiny Brights.

I had not caught Zeta before but from the start when the guitars created an ethereal sound, they built the layers throughout their set to create some very catchy pop rock. I was very impressed and very annoyed that they were playing to an almost empty venue.

The Battery Kids have been around since 2005 and I have heard them often compared to Muse. I can see where this comparison comes from but their sound is developing to a more individual sound from the last time I saw them. From the opening of Raising The Dead to the single Ghost Town from the EP Requiem for a Nightmare, which incidentally the band are giving away, the Battery Kids have a dark moodiness mixed with high energy and tonight they delivered a killer set.

The Shiny Brights have had a remarkable journey so far, they have not only released their own EP Let’s Not and Say We Did this year but were finalists in the National Campus Band Competition and also appeared on the Make Poverty History DVD. Live The Shiny Brights live up to the hype and along with all the bands playing on the night, didn’t let the fact that Adelaide was in hiding stop the quality of their performance.

It has been some since the Rocketsmiths graced our shores and I for one have been harassing these guys to come back since their amazing set last year supporting The Basics and Little Red.

In town to launch their second EP Parts, Pieces, which was produced by award winning Producer Magoo and recorded on his regional property, lead singer Dom promised before the show that their sound had changed from the previous popabilly to a more mature rock sound with their new material.

The set included a good mix of their new stuff, including the latest single The Boy Who Cried Misery but still included the fabulous Modern Life and Augustine from last year’s Meet Horace and Clyde EP.

The Rocketsmiths are one of my favourite live bands and one of the best in Australia and tonight Adelaide lost a live music opportunity that will probably never be repeated!
