Wednesday night saw a massive turn out to Canberra’s ANU Bar for the return of Modular Music’s Van She. As a part of their tour across the country the band have been hosting ‘parties’ to celebrate the launch of their much long awaited debut album titled V.

Kicking off the Canberra night was Sydney trio Art Vs Science. The three boys had a simillar vibe to that of The Presets. They just as well could be them but younger and more synthy? The two were no doubt confident adding ‘interpretative’ dance moves and gestures in between playing the keys.

The highlight of their performance was definitely one song titled Parlez Vous where the audience was demanded to scream oui! oui! oui! Art Vs Science left audience members wanting more and they will bring it in the future to those electro jam band fans.

Next up, Sydney act Lost Valentinos. Instantly a cheer for the look and feel which the band gave off whilst on stage. Looking much like amigos with a mission of love and music. The music was absolutely sensational as it was driving, unique, and had a touch of electronica full of much ambience and echoey guitar shredding. An excellent climatic start, to build up some excitement but it seemed an incomplete climax. And not only that, the vocals disappointed with the vocalist not being able to be heard properly.

Disregarding that note, Lost Valentino’s like Art Vs Science had the same qualities which made the audience holler, scream and shout.

Upon entry to the stage Van She came on quite enthusiastically. Two of their band members proudly wearing a freshman school jacket with the letter ‘V’ embroided on the side. They chose to open the set with Memory Man and then followed with other songs from the album V such as Sex City, Shape Knife, Cat And The Eye, Kelly and more. Unfortunately, nothing stood out and the best songs of the night were radio favourites Strangers and Changes. With the exception of one song: The Sea which gave off this feeling of space, full of complexities within the music.

Overall the performance could be like the many bad album reviews the popular act have recieved – search google. One perspective is that like their album their live songs are just catchy, typically poppy and cute. Sadly like their album their show last Wednesday was lacking something that would make it more than just an okay peformance. Despite that, the fact ANU Bar was full on a Wednesday night with a full comfy mosh pit is somewhat impressive.
