When I first read that Wendy James was touring I was in disbelief, I thought she would have been washed up years ago, but after last nights set I have to say she has awesome taste in music, she was spinning everything from Television’s Marquee Moon to Beyonce’s Crazy in Love, the set seemed to flow seamlessly despite the diverse music genre’s.
I have to admit Wendy was a pin up idol of mine, but to some disappointment she didn’t play any of her old hits last night, but then again that would have been a bit self graduating. Even though her group Transvision Vamp weren’t around very long they did have a significant impact on the 80s music scene, I could pretty much guarantee that if you were to go to a Karaoke bar Transvision Vamp would be sung with great drunken gusto.
When I first arrived it was a typical Melbourne crowd standing around looking completely bored and trying to hard to look cool, it wasn’t til later in the night when a few punters jumped up on stage with her (myself included) the place started to liven up a bit. Wendy was more than happy to have half the venue dancing behind her and she was also very obliging to pose for photos and sign autographs in between spinning songs. When she played the Blue Light Disco classic Nutbush City Limits and small group of people started to do the moves, Wendy’s reaction was priceless, she looked ecstatic.
I was more than surprised in her awesome taste in music, and I think her set would very well suited to the Meredith crowd – I hope the Meredith organisers are reading this. What started out as a boring night turned out to be one big retro party, with one of the 80s trashiest icons.
