At 9.20pm, California’s Thrice made their appearance on stage, flanked by cheers from fans. The original venue was the UNSW Roundhouse, but was changed to The Metro, perhaps due to smaller-than-expected ticket sales. The Metro nevertheless was quite full with fans who sang along and raised their fists in the air to show their approval.
This is Thrice’s first time down under since taking part in The Soundwave festival. The foursome from Irvine, California, seemed quite settled as they threw themselves into their set, playing fan-pleasing songs such as Silhouette, All That’s Left, Stare At The Sun and Image Of The Invisible.
Vocalist Justin Kensrue was not very talkative, preferring to immerse himself in his performance. His fellow band members followed suit, as Ed Breckenridge plucked away on bass and twirled numerous times on stage. Guitarist Teppei Teranishi was diminutive yet steadfast, letting his instrument doing the talking, as drummer Riley Breckenridge provided a solid beat.
The tour has coincided with The Alchemy Index Vols III & IV album release, the follow up to 2007’s The Alchemy Index Vols I & II. The album’s first single Come All You Weary was played; a lovely slow number that diversified the tempo for the evening and witnessed a few hands swaying side to side. This was quite a contrast to the fast-paced Artist In The Ambulance tracks, illustrating Thrice’s great body of work as the crowd chanted along and tapped their feet. A great night was had by all attendees, and I look forward to their next visit.
