Beach House @ Mojos 24/08/08

The weather has been warming up over the past few weeks; thankfully Mistletone saved Mojo’s regulars a trip down the coast and brought the Beach House to Fremantle. Baltimore voice Victoria Legrand and dreampop wizard Alex Scally of Beach House aurally pleasured the crowd all the way to cloud nine.
The night started with a small but intimate crowd for Perth locals Astral Travel who played a fun set. The Tigers played a well-structured Avant-pop set to a growing crowd who were treated to the genius lyrics of Chris Cobilis. Cobilis’ vocals added parmesan and cracked black pepper to the pleasurable melodies of The Tigers tri-coloured musical pasta.
After a weekend of solo shows, Fabulous Diamonds graced the stage, mesmerizing the cross-legged listeners with aural orgasms and experimental blare. It appeared Fabulous Diamonds were sent down from outer-space to hypnotize the crowd and deliver them to another time where drums and organs were played on the same instrument. For a full review on the investigational world of Fabulous Diamonds live music see CatherineParrish’s review.
Beach House brought the crowd back to Earth via Legrand’s comforting voice which beckoned the multitude to the stage. Their sound might be compared to rolling Fleet Foxes, Feist, Love Spirals Downwards and Velour 100 into one. Scully’s timely vocal harmonies and bittersweet melodies were rapture to the crowd’s ears. Gila and Heart of Chambers were clear favourites, and kept the crowd swaying from start to finish. Percussionist Dave Bergander added an ethereal texture to the pastel mood-pop sounds of guitar, keyboard and velvet vocals. Apple Orchard and Master of None left the crowd drifting off on a reverie to lullaby-land. Beach House were the perfect remedy to wisp away the week’s end and to introduce a warm sensuality to Perth’s spring.
