Another wet and cold night in Adelaide and with the Olympics on as well there were plenty of excuses, but the punk rock faithful were out in force to see San Diego punk rock stalwarts Unwritten Law and Spung Monkey. Unwritten Law have been regular tourers down under and have built up a solid and loyal fan base and as if you needed another reason to get along and see the boys, along for the ride were fellow Californians Sprung Monkey and WAs Elora Danan, which further guaranteed a great night of punk rock.
Due to Elora Danans last minute cancellation, first up were Adelaides own Embird who had apparently gotten the call that afternoon. Embird played for about 30 mins to a slowly building crowd and got those there early ready for the Cali bands to come.
Then the first of the San Diego double, Sprung Monkey. The guys hit the stage lead by their ever cool front man Steve Summers and launched into Regulator. Apart from a few fans down the front the crowd didnt really give much, but that didnt deter the Monkey from turning in a solid 60 min set. Highlights of the set were Swirl, No Solution in which a crowd member was invited up on stage to finish the song and Stay Down. Sprung Monkey finished the set in frantic style by covering one of the best punk rock songs ever written, Bad Religions American Made.
Then it was time for Unwritten Law. But before the guys arrived on stage a young shirtless guy came out and played an amazing version of Teenage Suicide on the keyboard, it took a bit of time for the crowd to cotton on, but as soon as they did they were in fine voice and added the vocals. Then the real band came out and out of nowhere the crowd seemed to double, it went from very sparce to quite full very quickly.
UL opened with Underground and launched straight into the full version of Teenage Suicide closely followed by Californian Sky which kicked the show off at a great pace and got the crowd singing and dancing.
UL played a great set of old and new tracks. Highlights included Shoulda Known Better, Seein Red, the classic Lonesome, the acoustic Rest Of My Life and Welcome To Oblivion. UL returned after a quick break to play a 4 song encore including a cover of Grinspoons More Than You Are, the ever popular Cailin before finishing the show with Superman.
I doubt there would have been a disappointed punter in the house, what a great show by one of punk rocks finest.
