Exposed debutantes Down n Dirty got down ‘n’ dirty at Transit. Not quite indecent exposure… but they sure got exposed.

Local duo Kiss Off Electric kicked off the night at Exposed after 9 pm. Although all seats were taken, the low volume unfortunately meant they came across as nothing more than background music. This didn’t seem to bother the Exposed residents who played their set with enthusiasm regardless.

The Duchess graced the stage just after 10 pm. Doing the ladies proud, she played what she likes to call an “eclectic” mix from dub to dance to hip hop to electro and more, her set was creative and the crowd was left not knowing what to expect next. That’s because neither did she, admitting later she didn’t have a playlist planned and simply played off the crowd in true experimental style. Playing dance remixes of Ladyhawke’s Dusk Till Dawn and Paris Is Burning, a Busta Rhymes track and even M.I.A’s trumpet fanfare from Bucky Done Gone made an appearance and got the crowd‘s attention. At almost 11 pm things got louder, the numbers and tempo picked up and so did the first signs of dancing. Soulja Boy’s Crank That was popular with the bump ’n’ grindin’ teeny boppers that seemed to appear from nowhere.

When Exposed residents Terrorvision took over after 11 pm the dancing continued with front half of the floor filled. They opened with Peter Heller’s Atlanta of Human Traffic fame and followed with uber catchy tracks Great DJ and That’s Not My Name by The Ting Ting’s which were dance floor favourites with the young crowd. Terrorvision obviously enjoyed themselves as they played upbeat sounds and sing-along samples including The Rapture’s No Sex For Ben, Notorious B.I.G.’s Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems and Naughty By Nature’s Holiday. Although the punters started filling in, the crowd remained tame, which left the bored bouncers helping out in the glassy’s department.

Debuting at Exposed was Rubicon who was next on the bill, where he did more mixing and less sampling which was fresh change but saw the dance floor numbers drop. Playing just after midnight, his drum ‘n’ bass and electro efforts were overshadowed by technical problems or what sounded like a CD of the scratched variety. With a few seconds of silence here and there, he copped a few boos from the crowd. Sean from Kiss Off Electric and Beat It came to his aid, with Sean eventually taking over. Rubicon, unable to finish his set, leaves and returns not long after for a second attempt where he’s plagued by the same problem and decides to hand it over to the Down n Dirty DJs early.

The much anticipated Exposed debutantes Down n Dirty DJs took to the stage just before 1 am. The duo from Sydney was the pick-me-up the crowd needed and didn‘t disappoint. Playing a mix of electro and break beats, they got the first big cheers for the night and it seemed the dance floor wasn’t big enough when the numbers peaked. The Prodigy’s Smack My Bitch Up was the highlight of their set and a sheer crowd pleaser. Down n Dirty played an exciting high energy set that was awesome to watch. What else can I say? They just got down n dirty.

Exposed faithfuls danced on to witness popular residents Beat It and Staky take to the decks together. Just before 3 am they ironically played Faithless’ Insomnia, a reminder that I should be getting me some – sleep that is.
