A small gathering of punters had gathered at The Zoo for the opening set by Clinkerfield’s Jimmy Stewart, and early-comers were treated to half an hour of beautiful whisky-tinged harmony and melody. For those who were there, Jimmy’s performance was an amazing opening to an evening of terrific musicianship, with following act Tim Steward & Band continuing the wonderful tide of musical bliss. The former Screamfeeder/The Whats founder really does turn anything he touches to gold, whether it be fuzzed out rock, garage punk, or with his latest project, layered pop-rock with folk underpinnings. Backed by his equally talented five-piece, Steward played to a decent-sized audience who, while appreciative of the performance, seemed reserve to involve themselves despite the endless skill of this Brisbane icon and his troupe of musical partners. Playing tracks from his previous solo work, as well as songs off the group’s upcoming release, Steward and his band impressed many and proved why Steward is one of this city’s finest musicians.

By the time “the best band in Brisbane” (as Steward so frankly put it), hit the stage, The Zoo crowd had expanded three-fold as local institution The Gin Club began their set of terrific alt-folk tunes for a highly receptive and immensely engrossed crowd. Testament to their popularity and sheer talent, the quite-full venue lapped up every moment of the performance as the group showed their appreciation of the crowd by delivering yet another solid set of catchy, introspective tunes in their last Brisbane show before they head down the east coast for a few shows before performing at this year’s Splendour In The Grass. With their star continually on the rise, “The Ginners” can do no wrong on their way to folk stardom, and tonight’s delightful show undoubtedly evinced that.
