Dave McCormack and thePolaroids, The Camels @ Beck'sFestival Bar, Sydney, 14/01/04

It’s Festival time in Sydney again, with the Hyde Park Barracks in full swing, and as Dave McCormack stated it’s really a tent in the middle of the city, but a pretty decent one at that.

Much of the crowd had come to see Dave McCormack and the Polaroids, however as The Camels started it drew in the reasonable sized crowd into the tent with ‘She’s Got A Black Belt’. The Camels, a four piece, played a 40min set and warming up the Festival Bar goers with ‘The Party’s Over’.

Dave McCormack and the Polaroids with the feel good pop, quirky lyrics put on a very entertaining show. The lighting appropriately colourful and sound was great, one not actually feeling as though you were actually in a tent.

Unusually there was a void at the front of the stage in which Dave encouraged everyone “to feel the love” and fill the vacuum. They played a variety of material of their new stuff and threw in some Custard and Titanics songs as well. For the most part, the mood of the evening and songs being played centred on relationships or rather failures of, songs such as ‘If You Ever Leave Me, I’ll Hunt You Down And Kill You’ and ‘You Broke My Heart’ one from his solo work, as well as ‘I Want To Execute Your Ex-Boyfriend’.

Dave McCormack and the Polaroids really entertain the punters with familiar Dave interaction and banter, pausing between songs to ask “any questions yet?” and Dave turning on the charm with his unique moves. They had the crowd singing along to hits like ‘Millionaire Adventure Balloonist’ and ‘Apartment’. With Dave encouraging everyone that this was a “boogie boogie opportunity”.

Thankfully they returned for an encore with ‘I Could Never Be Your Woman’. Tonight was one of the better gigs I have been to, an intimate crowd and a fantastic show, this gig even prompted my partner-in-crime (who usually frequents doof clubs and bars) to say “I may even go and buy one of their CDs”. Different, happy pop indeed!
