The Boat People, Wind andBrackets, Ed Guglielmino @ TheTroubadour, Brisbane(27/06/2008)

A modest turnout greeted Ed Guglielmino as he played through a set of melancholic acoustic folk numbers. Joined by fellow guitarist Matt Redlich for the latter half of the set, Guglielmino provided a relaxed start to the eveing within his home venue, with Caught In A Landslide sticking out as a favourite for this reviewer.

As usual, friends and fans of local five-piece Wind & Brackets turned out in the dozens to support the somewhat unique post-punk styled act on the very same day as their debut EPs had been delivered to the band. An upcoming launch of said EP is happening July 12 at the Valley Studios, so for those who missed out tonight, get your tickets now! While the band seemed to have changed their sound somewhat since the Taking More/Hospitality/That Tight Was Bloody days (*sigh* how times change), they haven’t lost any of their songwriting skills or technicality. The permanent addition of a keyboard now guarantees the young lads an extra depth to their sound, as their new slew of tracks demonstrate so well. We’ll have to see how the EP pans out, but for the time being, it can be safely said that Wind & Brackets are ready to continue their rise to the top.

With a now quite full Troubadour providing a bustling atmosphere for artist and audience alike, The Boat People took the stage, to enthusiastic cheer. The four-piece were on song for the whole set, as they turned out great performances of older tracks plus their brand new single Awkward Orchid Orchard, which sounds just as great live as it does in recorded format. Lead vocalist James O’Brien was very appreciative of the crowd, which included beautiful songstress Kate Miller-Heidke among its ranks, and the rest of the band showed their appreciation with amazing displays of musicianship and finesses. Their sophomore album Chandeliers will be released later this month, so for all you Boaties fans out there, the wait is almost over!
