Launching the tunes from their killer new album Computer Love, TZU unleashed the new line up of the band. For years TZU have been a four piece, but they have expanded to an eight piece crew with a new keyboardist and drummer. As before the boys switch between singing and their instruments, but now the flow of the set is more even balanced and Joellistics and Count Bounce have the time to work the crowd more.

They opened the show with the awesome first track of the new album called We Got the Feeling, which is about taking a break and rejuvenating yourself to keep the band sounding fresh. However tonight’s set was a little disappointing, there was something missing and the band seemed a little flat or tired. Every TZU gig I’ve seen before had an amazing uncontrolled anarchy to it, with Joelistics controlling the reins and pulled the crowd in when he needed. However tonight I kept waiting for Joelistics to break free and go on one of his free styling rants, but it never happened. It was only toward the end of the gig things sounded to tighten up a bit. There was nothing technically wrong with the gig – the band was solid and the new tracks are fantastic, but it just didn’t have the zip and pop punters have come to expect at a TZU show.

But a big shout out to Grilla Step the band that supported TZU. Grilla Step is the new outfit for former Avalanches member DJ Dexter and sees him accompanied by a live percussionist and two traditional Polynesian log drummers. The amalgamation of the log drummers and the electro beats of DJ Dexter sounded fantastic and about half through the set a young group of Polynesian boys came out and for a crumping exhibition; mixing African dance, Capoeira and free-style street dancing into a spectacular display – a perfect accompaniment to the frantic beats.
