After the release of their long awaited debut album Triangle Island and touring last year alongside pop sensations Operator Please. Melbourne’s Flamingo Crash are finally on the road, headlining their own ‘The Triangle Island Tour’. They were even so kind to include a free show at one of Canberra’s favourite hangouts the Transit Bar.

People were eager to get inside last Thursday night. The question to ask was it the cold winter breeze, or did they just know that Flamingo Crash were ready to drop some mystery music now! Playing that night alongside Flamingo Crash was an impressive bunch of Sydney-based supporting acts including the great The Vignettes, the friendly Lions At Your Door and rock-ballad classical cats The Jezabels.

The band’s demeanour and appearance all possess a uniform kind of cute, loveable sort of dorkiness. Sound wise, the four just blended so well – keys, drums, guitar and bass with the right lyrics and energy. Together this made the perfect combination to bring their listeners the sweetest electro pop rock feel to make punters dance.

The standout tracks of the night would have to have been It’s Mystery Music (which was dedicated to a punter who brought Isaac a water) and the popular Triple J spinner Yes Yes Yes. It was difficult to fault Flamingo Crash. Personally their live show was just as remarkable as their recordings. The bonus of seeing them live was that they seemed to add personality to the music, making it much more exciting and frivolous. Their stage presence was a pleasure to watch. Especially that of singer Isaac Emmanuel, who was absolutely eye-catching with little funky gestures. The night ended sweetly with the band gracing the Transit scene, chatting to punters about Melbourne vs Sydney, life on the road and so on.

Brisbane’s Rave Magazine described these guys as “one foot in the past.” They aren’t wrong, but then again they aren’t entirely correct. The Flamingo Crash sound is also modern and young, which is probably why these guys are doing so beautifully. Hopefully they will think about the future and crash Canberra again – we’ll have them.
