Juicebox Sunday @ Bakery15/06/08
Tue 17th Jun, 2008 in Gig Reviews
Apparently Colors’ frontman Simon Fasolo wants to start a career in hand modelling, Bass player Reu wants to walk barefoot from LA to New York whilst playing in a midget band, Drummer Damian is planning on his 4th set of baby boy twins and lead guitarist Dave is off to India for a meditation retreat. Whatever the reason… Colors are no more. They decided to make Sunday at Juicebox their farewell show… literally blood, sweat and tears.
The vibe was a lot more intimate than Saturday’s mish-mash of ups from The Preytells and downs from overrated and overweight headline act, End Of Fashion. Free ice-cream was replaced with chorizo in a roll, lingerie models were replaced with skateboarders and Thomas Ford was replaced with stilt-walkers; ingredients for a fun night.
The Bakery was transformed again, this time with two stages playing back to back. Blackmilk played a tidy set on the small stage before Mile End opened up on the main stage. What began as a good set slowly became long and drawn out, and as Colors fans filled the side room, Fasolo and crew were left waiting for 20 minutes as the Mile seemed like it would never End.
Colors were clearly emotional leading up to their final set; hugs flying, a few tears and a big “fuck you” to a local Perth publication for branding them “not bad for a high school band”. They kicked off strongly and with passion running wild, they blasted through 5 or 6 songs like a band at the peak of their career, not the end. The crowd were swept up in the moment with the entire front row, including one FasterLouder photographer, shedding a tear as things inevitably drew to a close.
Paying homage to the gods of rock and roll, Colors ended their set in style. Bearing in mind that Perth bands don’t have a massive amount of money, Fasolo sacrificed his hand instead of his guitar, by smashing it against the drum kit. Guitars were thrown to the ground (with moderate force keeping money issues in mind), blood spilled from the cut on Simon’s hand which ended up smeared all over the drum kit, plugs pulled, power switched off… blood, sweat and tears; Colors no more.
