Monday night, long weekend. It’s a frantic intense blur of energetic hounding rhythm. Civil Society represent – they know how to pick the bands. Not only !!! (Chk Chk Chk), but also Lost Valentinos, teenagersintokyo and Amy Meredith. Australian talent and international mayhem. Swagger and skank until you drop. Take a sickie the next day.
Tonight was a chronic amalgamation of amazing sounds. An outlandish musical concoction hurled over the loud speakers with force. Massive big ups to the remarkable local talent from Sydney who continually impress us with their vibrant flair. Teenagersintokyo and Lost Valentinos really set the scene with an extraordinary showcase of groovy indie rockin’, dance and percussion loaded punches.
In the midst of a hurricane speed tour of Australia before they hit the summer time festival circuit of North America, Chk Chk Chk released upon a beer-can hurling Metro crowd a hypnotic and electrifying fusion of funk laden punk-spectacular dance beats. Theirs is a dirty growling distinctive sound twisted with a mix of guitars, drumming and heavy percussion, jagged bass, horns tooting and devouring synthesisers.
Fronting the army of seven musicians and some ring-ins, in no passive fashion, was vocalist Nic Offer. His onstage dance moves were insatiable, quite clearly reflected in the outrageous mimicking quality of the swashbuckling crowd who wished them to continue jamming together forever. Chk Chk Chk were definitely the life of the party. They belted out the most contorted, sweaty and magical blend of tunes. They completely smashed it. Easily one of the most stimulating live acts of their time.
Some of the standout songs were Heart of Hearts, All My Heroes Are Weirdoes, Pardon my Freedom and of course, Must be the Moon. Without getting too excited, Chk Chk Chk are electrifying. They’ve got that grimy jamming ability and can do whatever they want, with a splendid fusion of genres to deliver precisely what their audience wants to hear. Their oft-quoted slogan “Let someone else soundtrack the comedown; Chk Chk Chk are all about the high”, couldn’t be more fitting. They really have their own trademark juggernaut of sound that blends them lavishly into previously unimaginable territories.
They absolutely killed at the Metro and are amongst the best live acts around.
