Screech, Emporium, Drawcard @Snitch - Rosies, Brisbane(12/06/08)
Sun 15th Jun, 2008 in Gig Reviews
Kicking off the night was four piece punk/rock band from Sunshine Coast, Drawcard. They started off with a rather original, if slightly confusing, bunch of beeps. Thankfully, these were over and done quickly and the band launched into their set with a heavy rock number that was quick in getting the crowd nodding along. The songs were a little rough at the start but got better along the way, with an impressive display screamo towards the end, hinting at what might be in store for a band that delivers effective, catchy rock. They interacted well the crowd, and even managed to get some familiar fans singing along to their rather addictive chorus in Tear My Heart Out. The last song was definitely a crowd favorite, with guest vocals by Screech.
Next up was a local band, Emporium, who managed to pull a decent sized crowd by their first number. Musically, Emporium put on an exciting show, with captivating melodies and beats. Unfortunately the vocals were lacking, whether it was due to sickness or shyness, the set was definitely missing the usual edge, making it difficult to tell the lyrics of one song from another. However, they managed to keep the majority of the crowd entertained. Not the best show I’ve ever seen of Emporium, however it was still a decent performance.
Headlining the night was the intriguingly named Screech, from Brisbane. The band threw themselves into the set with an energetic, fast paced number that had the crowd dancing in no time. Screech managed to combine addictive guitar riffs with pumping drum beats in a pop rock screamo fusion. Despite a somewhat hyper stage presence they managed to slow down it down, if only for a bit, with their almost ballad-like Alone is Murder. This was received enthusiastically by the crowd. For a band that who’ve only been on the scene a relatively short time, Screech put on an dynamic live show with an impressive display of musicianship, catchy lyrics and addictive melodies. A band with an exciting future and one to watch out for, expect their EP out shortly.
