Melbourne indie rockers Skybombers are already on their way to stardom. All at just 21 years, these boys find themselves living a sweet rock-and-roll lifestyle. They’re on the road, drinking every night and hanging out with punters who just want to dance to their youthful-energetic tunes. Just recently, they’ve been honoured to have supported the likes of the Foo Fighters. After a sensational year for the boys, they are enthused to be releasing their debut album Take Me To Town (which will be out June 7).

As a part of their tour across the country, they stopped by The Greenroom in Phillip to show punters an explosive evening. Around 8:30pm, the venue was completely empty and it wasn’t until a bit before 9pm when people began making their way up stairs. Kicking off the night was Fistful Of Nothing. Their ambient rock sound got heads turned to the stage. It was a disappointing to see a band with such energy on stage to not have the ability to get the audience up to the stage. Once they master this – they’re definitely on the way to success.

The Hancock Basement got on stage around 10pm. The boys took their time setting up but once they got going they played a beautiful set. They are one of Canberra’s favourites who are mainly found supporting many interstate acts. You can tell their presence is just more focused on the just their music; however it’d be nice to see more interaction with the audience from all band members.

Skybombers took the stage at 11pm – they all looked shocked to see such an undersized audience in front of them. Frontman Hugh urged the crowd to move closer to the stage. The moment they hit their first notes, energy filled the room. The boys played new and old tracks – and reminded people of the release of the album. Tracks like Always Complaining which was written about Hugh’s mum and 6 AM got people excited and dancing like complete maniacs with a mission.

Even though it was an explosive night full of great tunes there was disappointment attached. It was not the music but more so the lack of a crowd. Music like that of the Skybombers needs the enthusiasm of at least 100 punters all ready to get fully sardine-like mosh-pit kids to give the boys the atmosphere to suit their music. For those few lucky punters who made their way to see the show, they were invited by the band to enjoy a beer with them at the end of the night.
