The opening night of Rosie’s newest venture, Thriller, started off a little slow, with the majority of the usual crowd at the I Killed The Prom Queen show on at Club 299. Never the less the night started off well with local Brisbane band Lair Eon (formerly the Matchless Armada) hitting the stage at around 10.30pm.

Their first song was a faced paced indie number, reminiscent of Steriogram at certain times, which had heads nodding along within a few minutes. They managed to effortlessly switch between genres, pumping out a hillbilly inspired number, followed by one with a bit of a metal edge then a danceable Britpop number. Despite having a fill in bassist, the band were cohesive and performed well as a group without any one member trying to steal the spotlight. Towards the end of Lair Eon’s set a few brave souls even attempted to create an interpretive dance routine which worked out surprisingly well during one of the many instrumentals. I would recommend trying to get along to one of the Lair Eon’s shows, even if indie rock isn’t your genre as they put on a good show and offer a little more variety than usual singing about old girlfriends.

The next, and last act of the night was the much anticipated SPOD, who I had never had the pleasure of seeing live before. For those unfamiliar with this Sydney band, its a indie electro band fronted by Spod occasionally joined by other musician – tonight’s show included Spod and a synth player. By the time the duo hit the stage the room was nicely packed with a crowd of fans round the stage. Performing as a duo tonight, Spod quickly whipped the die hard fans into a frenzy within the first few seconds in an energetic stage show complete with over sized balloons and streamers. They had an amazing stage presence, however after the end of the first song, it was starting to feel like one of those shows when only the die hard fans understand what is going on. Thankfully this feeling didn’t last and by the fourth song I was willing to accept Spod back into my heart. The music was addictive to say the least, and made you want to get up and dance as much as possible. Spod isn’t the type of band you can listen to without being in the mood to dance and have fun, so if you’re not ready to let loose might not be your thing.
