Bluejuice, The Paper Scissors,Schoolfight, The Rocketsmiths@ The Step Inn, Brisbane(31/05/08)

Walking up Brunswick Street to the Step Inn, punters were greeted with disheartened strangers pleading with the bouncers to let them in to the sold out show. Those fortunate enough to get last minute tickets were eagerly gathering around the stage awaiting the first band to kick off would be an incredible night of music.

Local boys, The Rocketsmiths of course got everything started and quickly warmed up the room with, Worth It , a song off their current EP, Meet Horace and Clyde. Ripping through their set only pausing for mid song banter, The Rocketsmiths showcased new songs, The River and Man With A Gun which was incredibly well received by the crowd, who continuously yelled in appreciation and danced to every drum beat. It is actually quite impossible to stand still during a Rocketsmiths set. They finished with another new song, Tale Of Two City Boys, the very catchy chorus was picked up quickly by the audience who continued to hum it at the bar throughout the night. Seeing The Rocketsmiths just leaves you standing there with a big cheesy grin on your face.

Another local band, Schoolfight again got the crowd excited with their laid back style of reggae hip hop, and an amazing slap bass guitar instantaneously giving the room a sudden funky feel. The crowd were bouncing along and loving every minute of it.

The Paper Scissors emerge and burst into their set, making the sweaty crowd move energetically. A circle mosh was attempted by happy over-excited fans showing their enthusiasm. The Paper Scissors played songs which showcased their album, Less Talk, More Problems and also played a new song, How. Next, the definite crowd favourite Yamanote Line was played which had the crowd swaying and singing their ‘woaaahhh ooohhh woaaahhh ooohhh’ in perfect unison. True fans were out tonight, singing every lyric, to which Paper Scissors reacted by giving them a great show. Saxophones were brought out for The Bandit which gave the atmosphere a bluesy vibe. They finished on radio single We Don’t Walk, which just topped everything off.

After the room clearing out in between bands, it very quickly became full again when Bluejuice took the stage. Playing to an extremely hot and sweaty crowd just set the scene for a typical Bluejuice show. Shirtless frontman Jake Stone was making the girls up the front crazy when the chaotic rhythms of Phantom Boogie started. Bluejuice flew through their set playing crowd favourites off their album, Problems, hardly pausing for anyone to catch their breath.

Recent Triple J favourite, Vitriol was most definitely reconigised and danced to. Bluejuice finished with The Reductionist and left the hot crowd, sweaty and out of breath.

As the crowd cleared and made their way back onto the street, you couldn’t help but pity the disappointed ticketless punters sitting in the rain hoping to hear the last sounds of chaotic musical wonder.
