Boston/Irish punk rockers the Dropkick Murphys have been regular tourers of Australia over the years and its great to see them back in support of their latest record The Meanest Of Times. And as if that wasnt good enough they have brought with them New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All.
Adelaide should consider itself lucky to get this massive show after the pathetic turn out the last time the DKM played. Adelaide punters complain (including myself) when bands miss us out, but if you don’t support the shows we do get what do you expect? If tonights awesome line-up doesn’t pull a crowd, I’m moving to Melbourne.
To my relief, when I rocked up at Live on Light Square the sold out sign was up and place was a buzz with punters and inside the smallish venue the atmosphere was intense. Despite these bands coming from quite different genres and having differing fan bases everyone was getting along and there was no disrespect shown to either band by opposing fans.
First up were Third Time Lucky, who sucked. Their sound was horrible, their only saving grace was that they did play fast. And a support band should never bag the headlining act even if it is in jest.
Next up were Sick Of It All, who on any other night, could easily play and fill their own show. Despite playing the early slot the boys hit the stage hard announcing let the games begin and quickly showed why they have such an awesome reputation of putting on heavy hitting shows. There were a lot of punters there to see SOIA and they flocked to the front of the stage and kicked a violent circle pit in to gear. Highlights of the set included Built to Last, Disco Sucks Fuck Everything, Rat Pack (which was attempted and failed by Dougie out of the crowd) and the crowd involved Die Alone. SOIA played for about an hour before finishing the night with the walls of death which involves both sides of the pit crashing into each other. SOIA were awesome and had the crowd warmed up and ready for the DKM.
Then it was time for the Dropkick Murphys, the sextet piled onto the small stage to the sound of Irish folk and bagpipes led by Al and Ken before launching into Famous For Nothing which had the crowd singing along right from the start. Without hesitation they went into Boys on the Docks followed by State of Massachusetts which kicked the mosh into high gear and continued the sing-a-long. DKM played for over an hour and a half and included songs of the new record as well as many classic oldies. Highlights included Curse of a Fallen Soul, Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya, Fields of Athenry and a cover of AC/DC’s Jailbreak. They finished the main set by inviting all the ladies onto the stage for the Spicy McHaggis Jig and Kiss Me, Im Shitfaced. DKM returned to the stage to play an encore including I’m Shipping Up To Boston before finishing the night as they always do by inviting everyone up on stage to sing Skinhead On The MBTA.
As the masses left, there couldn’t have been a disappointed punter. What a great night of hardcore and punk rock.
