Jack Nasty Face @ Spectrum,Sydney (23/05/08)
Wed 28th May, 2008 in Gig Reviews
Sometime last year my cousin (the authority on all things cool) was ranting and raving about a local act that was unique. She mentioned something to the effect “There’s nothing like them and everything about them rocks!” Quick to dismiss her commentary as nonsense, I went to a gig at The Annandale and was blown away by the flair of singer Jack Nasty and the uncanny rhythm and groove of the music.
A year later with glee I raised my hand to review Jack Nasty Face at The Spectrum on a cool Friday night, better reserved for a blanket and hot chocolate at home. With a Faster Pussycat banner in the background, an array of models descended onstage parading the latest clothing range at drummer Tim Pussycat’s Newtown store Faster Pussycat. The series was rockabilly interspersed with punk that had great flair and added pizzazz to the night. As the models posed and toyed with the audience, singer Jack Nasty snapped photos that made up the new catalogue.
Fashion show out of the way, guitarist Jack Sly introduced the band, followed by Jack Nasty striding onto the stage in his undertaker outfit. The night’s set began with Snakes Alive as Jack Nasty strutted, posed, gyrated and contorted with his Mick Jagger meets Clockwork Orange act. Jack Nasty encouraged the audience to interact as he crooned, “I still feel the love”. My friend and I left our inhibitions at the door as we swayed and laughed at the madness that is Jack Nasty Face. The strong following keenly applauded the band and encouraged the band to belt out the songs. T-shirts and EPs were given away among Get Out My Hole and Moove being sashayed onstage.
Tim Pussycat did a stellar job on drums, working in harmony with Jacob Sly and Shibby on bass. For those who remember Pussycat from his days at Motorhank, he was happy to confirm they will be back on the music scene later in the year. All in all, Jack Nasty Face was worth braving the cold.
