There’s no better way to liven things up on a Saturday night than a little
schmoozing to funk music. Luckily for me, this was exactly what was on the cards last night at Live on Light Square with a performance from Australian hip-hop DJ’s The Resin Dogs. Supported by DMC champion vinyl spinner DJ Dexter, their funk infused hip-hop provided a tempo that lured even the shyest of people onto the dancefloor.

Opening act DJ Dexter set the tone for the evening with his mixes of alternative dance and hip-hop tracks. Despite a fairly cold reception from the audience and little dancefloor activity, he performed with an energy that was admirable and was at no point hesitant to throw a few “Whatups!” and “Yeahs!” to the crowd. Nearing the end of the set, a few pioneers had gotten up to dance and Dexter’s last few tracks were greeted with the cheers that they deserved. Perhaps the arrival of a group of Jim Beam promotion girls had something to do with the crowd’s last-minute energy, as when they flocked to the dance floor the male punters seemingly followed.

In the last half an hour of his set, the crowd doubled in size in preparation for the Resin Dogs to approach the stage. Just nearing midnight the moment finally arrived, as the three members walked on and perched themselves at turntables, drums and microphone respectively. With a quick introduction of “Hey, we are the Resin Dogs,” from vocalist Chris Bosley, the group launched into some funky instrumentals from their newest album More and tracks from the infamous Grand Theft Auto soundtrack. “People always ask us why we never play our old stuff,” said a sly Bosley, proceeding to ignite a scream from some girls with the telltale trumpet squeals of Blip Hop and the upbeat Biggie Fries.

Around three songs into the night, the group then took the time to introduce a special guest that I had noticed to be floating around the bar beforehand. Why, it’s none other than N’fa, the man formerly known as the 1200 Techniques MC. Receiving a warm applause, N’fa plucked up a microphone and proceeded to steal the show with his freestyling in Coming With The Sound and Caught Up. His addition
to the stage brought that special oomph to the performance that really drew people up to the centre of the room – so much so that two drunken girls started hoisting themselves up on stage to bust a move with him. Although the security guards opposed his level of fan appreciation, N’Fa and the Resin Dog lads seemed to be deeply amused. Admittedly, one of these stage-crashing girls may have been me – but hey, just one of the many perks of music journalism.

Wrapping up with a few more crowd favourites from the Grand Theft Auto soundtrack, the set finally ended leaving the crowd still jittering in their shoes. Although the gig had started off stale, a solid performance from all the musicians had warmed things up in the end and proved that even a decade down the track the Resin Dog’s still got’ it.
