Adelaide band of the moment Former Child Stars headlined the second Bootleg party at Electric Light Hotel and didn’t disappoint. This band know how to rock and have an energy and an aura that suggests big things are to come.
In the very short time they have been around they have blitzed the Adelaide live music scene and this performance was indicative of why they have built up a reputation which has seen them already performing with some of Australia’s best, as well as spots on the stages at the Big Day Out earlier this year and at the upcoming Come Out Festival.
Former Child Stars dominated the stage with their solid sound and from the opening strains of Lu*ke O’Loughlin’s* vocals in These Demons, they had already won over the crowd of indie kids, music fans, and pub crawlers. However, it seems it’s not just the many female fans that are overcome by the charisma of this fab five with one overjoyed punter joining the boys on stage much to their amusement.
They continued to dominate the stage with highlights including I’m Waiting and I’ll Be Just Fine which encouraged a very enthusiastic sing-a-long moment amongst some fans but the quintessential rock moment came at the end when bass guitarist Jade Eley played guitar hero and climbed up on the speakers at the front of the stage to finish Now the Night is Over in style.
Supported by new kids on the block Canes Venatic who have a laid back electronic psychedelic sound which at times induced a semi trance like feeling, but they also have some pretty good beats to bring you back to reality.
Mona Lisa Overdrive completed the line up and impressed with a beatnik 60’s energy that was at times reminiscent of a Gidget beach party.
The drummer as lead vocalist doesn’t always work but Mona Lisa Overdrive vocalist Alex kept the energy levels up high. The addition of violin and a third guitar at the end of the set took the energy levels up another notch giving them a huge sound. However, on such a small stage it started looking like there were as many people as The Polyphonic Spree. The only criticism I can give was the amount of time between songs needs to be tightened to make their set flow smother.
Between band sets Lady Strangelove’s Azz did an awesome job as guest DJ on the decks.
Bootleg has been showcasing some of Australia’s best indie bands since 2006 in Melbourne and now will now become a monthly fixture here in Adelaide.
The next Bootleg party will take place on June 14 so stay tuned to Fasterlouder for the line-up details.
