Call me superficial, but I always enjoy experiencing at something that looks as good as it sounds, and Ms Kate Miller Heidke certainly fulfils this in spades. Entering this gig with a touch of trepidation at the Gov, having not heard a great deal of the work of Ms Heidke besides two or three singles which have been bandied around, I was happily captivated by the entire repertoire. Starting a set with two of the better known singles is always a bit brave, but being a captive audience who are coming just to see you, you have a bit more freedom to play a list as you would like. Words and Make It Last set the scene for a glorious set, which was multifaceted enjoyment for all and sundry. Why and how the doubting Thomases may ask! Firstly Kate can obviously sing with her opera training and while the worry was that we would be regaled by mini arias throughout the performance, there instead was a marvellous voice beautifully mixed into her talented band at the Gov, kudos to the venue. Secondly the lyrics are clever, poignant and decipherable, so even a new fan can easily hear all the gems laid before them. Thirdly the band was a happy little unit which showed a beautiful cohesion to produce a sensational sound. And lastly, by God she is a cutie, so aurally and visually, your day has to be made.
The set had a smattering of songs from her previous releases and we were also treated to quite a number of songs which had not been recorded or released as yet, all of which had an instantaneous attractiveness to them, so rare for the work of most artists. Perhaps the highlight of the night was a rollicking rock version of You Are The Voice, done better than the mullet wearing one has ever been able to muster, and showcasing the fabulous guitar skills of Keir Nuttall, along with the smooth Bass of Ben McCarthy, backing of Nicole Brophy and drumming of Steve Pope. Everything was a joy to behold and this band has a tightness which make it a band you could see again and again and not tire of them. Catch them if you can!!
