Believing the starting time was 7:30pm, I rolled up at 6:50pm expecting to be greeted by a two mile queue of Korn fanatics. Instead I found only a handful of people milling around on Port Road. There was some music coming from the Entertainment Centre, I assumed it was house music. I soon discovered that the doors had opened much earlier, and Bloodsimple, led by ex Vision of Disorder singer Tim Williams were about to finish. I didn’t get in to see them in time, but from what I heard at the ticket booth, their sound was rock flavoured hardcore, as opposed to V.O.D’s more metallic brand of hardcore.
There appeared to be more people intent on eating their ‘dinner’ after work than getting a spot inside the main arena. I paid attention to who was eating the most hotdogs, so I didn’t get stuck in a packed mosh next to someone belching and farting domestic beer and offal.
Wandering into the main arena, Throwdown’s roadies were still sound checking. It was a sparse crowd at present. An usher gave their two cents worth about the attendance, I tried explaining that most people were there for Korn, and were busy getting drunk in the lobby. Throwdown, are the straightedge contemporary of Pantera, in fact they are more Pantera than Pantera were in their dying days. A band like this really needs a venue where the band and the crowd are falling over each other, not a cold concrete box like the Entertainment Centre.
A special mention to the bright spark who tried to sell my mate and I tickets to the show, while at the bar, no kidding.
Cleveland’s Chimaira, had a reasonably interesting light show and pretty lack lustre drumming. When you use two bass drums, I want the drummer pulling off something special, i.e Gene Hogland or Danny Carey country. Chimaira reminded me of all those generic metal bands that were around the first time I saw Korn, funnily enough.
The twenty year anniversary is the reason Biohazard have reformed and are a part of the Korn tour, tonight really wasn’t the night for it though. Biohazard really lack the sting they once had. There were a few older fans who seemed to be enjoying it, but most people weren’t too interested. The most excited response was roused by mention of singer and bassist Evan Seinfeld’s work in the porn industry.
By the time Korn were due onstage, the general admission area was full and ready to go. Right Now from Take A Look In The Mirror combined with spontaneous moshing all over the general admission floor got Korn’s show underway. A.d.i.d.a.s appeared five songs in. Jon Davis was huffing on pure oxygen the whole night. He didn’t speak to the crowd until about the sixth song, opting to go for rock concert clichés such as “Adellllaaaiiddee!!” and “Make some farr-king noise”, which made the crowd wet themselves in excitement, fair enough no doubt there were some who’ve waited over a decade to hear that. There was a reasonable mix of the old and new, with some obscure inclusions in the set such as Helmet In The Bush from the debut album, and what Davis claimed was his favourite track from Life is Peachy, _ Ass Itch_. The four song encore began with Blind and ended with Davis thanking the crowd for “Giving us the life and making our dreams come true”, before launching into Got the Life. Tonight would have made their Adelaide fans very happy.
