As far as I was concerned this was a Pennywise gig with a couple of supports (Im a little one-eyed). To most though, it was a power packed punk line up, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in Adelaide since the Vans Warped Tours. Bowling for Soup, The Vandals and Sum 41 could, on any other night, pack venues at their own shows, but tonight would fill the support slots for Hermosa Beach punk icons Pennywise.
First up was Bowling for Soup. Due to the band starting 30 mins earlier than the advertised kick off time and only playing for 30 mins I, and everyone I knew at the show, missed them. I’m sure they put on a cracking show and if anyone was there early get on and post a comment.
Next up were Tthe Vandals*. Ive seen these guys a few times and they have always been entertaining and right from the get go, opening with Supercalifragilistic, tonight was going to be no exception. Joining them on drums in the absence of Josh Freese was Bad Religions Brooks Wackerman who graced the Thebby stage for the 2nd time in 3 months. Highlights of the set were People That Are Going To Hell, America Fuck Yeah and Its a Fact, but the biggest highlight was the when Warren took the mic and finished the show with Don’t Stop Me Now, removed his pants to reveal Australia jocks and ran around the balcony before returning to the stage to finish.
Sum 41 were up next and were greeted with a massive cheer. I underestimated these guys, they came out and burned from start to finish and had the crowd going nuts. The whole floor turned into a mosh with a pretty big circle pit in the middle. Derick’s energy was awesome and rest of the band werent too far behind him. Fat Lip, Still Waiting and In Too Deep had the crowd going crazy but the highlight was the guy they got up on stage and was going mental the whole set. Sum 41 finished with Pain For Pleasure, which kept the crowd bouncing till the very end.
Then it was time for Pennywise, after missing Adelaide on their last 2 tours (including Falls), the wait had been long for most punters and the anticipation was high. “Hello, were Pennywise from Hermosa Beach California, are you ready?” Fuck yeah we were!! They launched straight into a newie off their new album Reason to Believe, which kicked the crowd into action. Pennywise hammered through a great set with hits spanning their entire catalogue barely stopping to catch their breath. They play with such anger and intensity its impossible not to pump your fist and stick your finger up. Highlights included Living For Today, Society, Pennywise, Perfect People and Aussie favourite Down Under. They finished the show, as they always do, with their tribute to Jason Matthew Thirsk Bro Hymn which had the whole crowd in voice. Fletcher announced during the set as long as you keep listening well keep coming, lets hope the wait till the next show isn’t as long.
