Close your eyes and think back to 2002. Yes, it has been six years since the whole return of garage rock phase where bands such as The Strokes, The White Stripes and The Vines took over the airwaves (and fashion mags). The Datsuns were lumped into the same category, despite avoiding the clichés of rehab, stoushes and supermodels that plagued many of their peers during this time.
You have to admit, after their killer self-titled debut the band seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth. They released album #2 and #3, worked with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and got a new drummer. Nobody cared.
Tonight at the Annandale, people do care. The venue is at full capacity despite the promise of the long weekend around the corner. Regular John kick off the festivities with a loud – œfuck you’ set that leaves my head throbbing, ears ringing and face melting. It’s the perfect starter to the night.
Dolf Datsun strides onstage looking like Jesus Christ. The front of the Annandale turns into a mini-mosh pit, and I am loving every moment of it. Playing a lengthy set that includes tracks from all three albums, you can’t help but realise that The Datsuns are a much better band live. Sure, it has taken me six years to reach this stage, but I am glad that it has happened. When Harmonic Generator is played three songs into the set, I’m so close to jumping the stage and I even catch myself singing along word from word.
Highlights include M.F From Hell and their cover of The Ramones’ The KKK Took My Baby Away. The boys even introduce some new songs from their soon-to-be-released album, which allude to a more mature, tighter and melodic sound. Bring on album #4. The Datsuns are back.
