2008’s Soundwave managed to pull in a bevy of International acts under an uncommonly hot summer’s day.

Set across five stages, outdoor events like these are a great opportunity for a power walk incorporating a browse at the stands and a beer or two, whilst stage hopping for your favourite act. Still, this formula didn’t seem to appeal to all the punters…

The Plain White T’s entertained an eager audience although many waiting to see Divine Heresy were bitterly disappointed as the hour and a half wait in line resulted in missing out on their set. According to Glen of upcoming Sydney outfit Jaded Empire, “how are you supposed to get that feeling of “Hell Yeah” waiting in line whilst the band you’ve come to see is playing” and you can’t see them. Other attendees were not sticking around for The Offspring and co. as the line up for amenities and drinks was according to some, taxing and “terribly disorganised”.

Unlike The Big Day Out, Soundwave caters to a heavier musical taste and crowd. While they may have less in common with their commericial music loving friends they still share the same festival faux pas – with many a punter suffering from heat exhaustion and as the day wore on quite a few pink skinned souls should have slipped, slopped, slapped. This however, did not dissuade fans from grooving away to Infectious Grooves as Mike Muir immersed himself in his metal funk rap beat rhymes, gyrating and entertaining a crowd who were privy to their first show for 13 years, as well the unleashing of their new song Get United. Pulling two audience members up on stage for a hand at vocals was the highlight of the set and illuminated Muir’s fantastic showmanship. The absence of bassist Robert Trujillo concreted “Metallica’s” stance on “no side projects”.

Saosin followed Muir’s set catering to an expanding crowd when As I Lay Dying’s set was cut short due to a glass bottle thrown at guitarist Nick Hippa, which resulted in a bleeding head wound as they played out The Sound of Truth.

The majority found their places at Stage 1 and 2 as Alexisonfire assaulted the audience with a kick ass performance followed by Incubus and a hearty sing along to Whatever Tomorrow Brings. Charttoppers The Offspring completed the night and their Why Don’t You Get a Job parody of The Beatles’ Obla Di Obla Da was a hit. Singer Dexter Holland was exciting to watch as he wooed the crowd with a strong set including fave fan tracks Come Out and Play and Pretty Fly (for a white guy).

- Arrived early to catch Fall of Troy. Oh whats this? there seems to be a 3metre wide entry gate for 10,000 people. Waited around for 30min. It wasnt moving, there were no lines. It was a funnel which spread up a hill into bush land. hmmm Ended up leaving, walked around the back to listen to FOT from 500metres away, outside the fence. Then decided we'd leave as we could see the line from the other end, and it still hadn't moved. Whilst we were in the line, people were fainting.... standing in heat + no water = not good.

Went to down some drinks..

- Came back a bit before 4pm. roamed around for a bit then decided we'd get some food before we see Thursday we we're pretty hungry. Standing in line 45minutes... oh crap whats that? they've started a touch early... sprinted to them through a bottleneck bridge. Why is there a 5metre wide bottleneck bridge heading to stage 1 & 2 the main stages? hmmm Thursday were full of heaps of energy. Halfway through the set frontman Geoff decided to call for "The Wall of Death" I saw the security guys literally grinning like kids at the crowd separating. Was good to watch.

Stumbled over to Motion City Soundtrack.... They were in key and everything and everyone seemed into it. However I couldn't take more than a few songs. Not my thing.

Props to Kevin Devine... who freaked out mid song with; Holy shit theres a fist-fight going on over there *stops song to watch* I hadn't heard his stuff before but it was pretty breezy. I liked it. But hold on, why put the Acoustic stage within an earshot of the 2main stages? There were times where you could hear the main stage clearer than the one you were standing 5metres infront of. Not good.

- Then headed over to Stage 5. Oh wait a second, this is rather small for Shadows Fall? *Looks at map* no this is definitely Stage 5. Wait a second... Jim Ward is on Stage 6 afterwards... theres no stage 6 on this official soundwavefestical.com map? Well Fall of Troy were playing on that hill over there... Or so it looked from outside. But that says Stage 4 on this official map? Damn I wish these stages had some signage. Stage 4 must be the real stage 5 since FOT were playing there. *runs to the real stage 5* to find that Shadows Fall had started early. Missed their first couple.... great. :(

Shadows Fall were dogged by bad wind on the hill. It was messing with their sound severely it sounded toneless and wasnt loud enough. They were going off though.

Back at the original Stage 5 it seemed to be an acoustic stage. So we figured this is where Jim Ward would be playing and that it was infact the 'hidden/secret' ommitted from map 'Stage 6' Thanks FL (scanning over your playing times you've listed stage 1, 2 , 4, 5, 6) Not sure if this was copy/pasted from a soundwave press release but yeah just realised that after getting home.

-Jim Ward was good, seemed to take his acoustic thing down an almost roots-y row down the river in a straw hat w/ grass in mouth sound. Closed with Sparta song 'Air' which was the highlight.

Walking over to the two main stages I noticed a few more pros/cons. Good job on the toilets. Seriously. More than enough. Not enough bins though. By this time there was already a heap of rubbish everywhere. And whose idea was it to put the modified tap areas at previously mentioned tight bottlenecks? at the top of hills... so theyd then create mud flows paths when you need to get from A to B. Speaking of getting from A to B. Lakes and shit getting in the way from A to B isnt a good thing!

Incubus were on note. Their set almost completely ignored SCIENCE and Make Yourself though.. apart from Vitamin and Drive. Everyone seems to be patting them on the back for this. Perhaps they feel theyve grown as artists. Thats fine (they've made atleast two direction changes over their career) but those 2 albums are still clearly their best. They were strained for time though. I actually noted Brandon asking for one more to a side of stage sound-dood. Perhaps their sideshow will contain 'the older stuff'

And drumroll to the highlight of the night. Which almost *almost* turned the entire shambles of a festival into awesomeness. The Offspring. I've never actually seen them before for some reason not worth explaining. But Smash was one of the first albums I bought as a 11-12year old. And lets face it theyve had some memorable singles over the years/albums but they took that stage by the balls... Normally with expensive epileptic fit inducing lighting rigs you get sidetracked.. forget about the music for a tad. But The Offspring seemed as if they were in a struggle to out-pace it. Opened with Bad Habit and it was UPHILL from there. Everyone was into everything they pulled out. Including Pretty Fly... which got everyone dancing. Closed with Self Esteem. Utter brilliance.

At the end of the day I kinda wished I'd just chilled at home and then turned up at 8pm. There were a ton of other bands I wanted to see. But It was all conflicting ofcourse. I'd penned down times to leave halfway through one band set to catch anothers... but after all the fucking around and waiting around it just felt good to stay put and not miss any music...

because that shit is unhealthy. water ftw!

btw clashpalace that was a good read. 10 gold stars!

spot on about shadows fall... can't wait to hear them properly tonight after that windblown shit i had to put up with (and the surprise of them coming on 40+mins early when i was expecting the band before them on the timetable)

i thin overall, a great line-up was largely wasted my mismanagement, poor stage placement, sound issues, painful entry, restricted access around the site once in, and copious amounts of wasted time doing basically essential things if you're there all day like eating and drinking (yes tho' well done at least with the toilet facilities)

P.S. coke is a must at any festival, water just doesn't wash down a gozleme like the good ole black death.... and XXX Gold (yet they'll happily sell full strength spirit cans at the capitalist special price of $10)... you are far king kidding me!!!

I love ICEES, Frozen Cokes at McDonalds rock too, 7-11 slurpees not so great... but my watery $5 ICEE was possibly the most horrible thing i've ever drunk, even tho after 30 minute waiting for it i'd have licked the sweat off the back of a passed-out punter for rehydration!

thank fuck i found those taps round the corner from stage 4. hit them half a dozen times and pointed quite a few people from the back of the ICEE line after my terible experience with it in that general direction.

i drove, had one schooner pre-going-in and one after leaving. no Gold, no breezers, i'm not gunna get exploited like that my some no-brainer organisers trying to fleece the hard music following community.

a metal/hardcore/et al festival needs primarily indoor stages (with good access!) to get the sound right with outdoor places + maybe a more mellow lineup on an outdoor stage to chill/unwind/eat/drink/meet/prepare for next band.

I was excited for this concert, Motion City Soundtrack, Saosin, Killswitch Engage and More! How could I stay away? Me and my friend arrived at about 10am (We usually lineup at smaller gigs tons earlier to get a good spot but since it was a festival and we'd be moving around a bit we didn't think we'd bother) So we waited under some trees and until i saw the line growing did I yank my friend over to the already huge line, when it hit 12 the line moved so slowly that we'd only move one or two steps every what seemed to be 20 minutes, the heat was really getting to us so we thought it was just because the line was so wide thats the reason it took so long but when we got to the gate there were only a little over 4 gates for over 10,000 people?! It was badly organized and once we got in we thought it was going to get better.

Once we got into the park we went straight to find out where the signing tickets were that we were told about via bulletin and no one was able to tell us. I went to the merch stand and asked them and they didn't know, apparently the people at stage 4 knew, what stage 4? None of the stages were marked and they weren't handing out maps. We must have missed Halifax's set by then so we wearily gave up and found a few friends and wandered over to Boys Like Girls (Myself catching a water bottle from the frontman and being so thirsty, taking a swig which later made me sick for weeks). The heat was getting unbearable so when their set ended we had to go sit down, listening to All Time Low in the background as we borrowed some sunscreen. I was already going red already but after we watched All Time Low We headed over for Plain White T's who put on a very good set, we got barrier and they didn't disappoint.

After that was another break, the taps in the busy route to Stage 1 and 2 from Stage 4 were becoming increasingly muddy and disgusting, people huddling under what shade they could find. I should have bought an umbrella because I was already burnt during Plain White T's. We wandered over to the barrier for Scary Kids Scaring Kids and they played an awesome set, I'm not much of a fan but the frontman Tyson had such energy. After SKSK of course was my long awaited Mindless Self Indulgence and they didn't dissapoint, Jimmy mockingly pretending to throw his jacket out and giving the hopeful fans the finger all gave us a good laugh.
After Mindless Self Indulgence we took another break before I hastily forgot about Motion City Soundtrack and did a quick dash down the hill to watch a few songs but already being exhausted as fuck I only stayed for my two favorite songs. After MCS we headed to Alexisonfire as a group and unlucky for us a circle pit appeared right next to us and the hardcore dancers started. I got half concussed and coudlnt breathe properly from all the dust from the dry ground kicked up. I lost my friends and I had to get out of there because I couldn't breathe. I stumbled wearily over to the medic tent where I got water and an apple because I was close to fainting.

Lucky for me the Singer for SKSK was around there and I chatted to him awhile, gaining my conciousness back. After I was well enough I headed over to Stage 3 alone to wait for Saosin but the band Infectious Grooves was on, I had never heard them before but I had an inkling it'd have some ska because of the guy from Suicidal was in there and Grooves gave me a hint. They played a pretty good set and got people jumping around, most unfortunately were there waiting for Saosin and weren't being too enthusiastic about it but when they got off the stage the anticipation was intense. I vowed to my friends we'd go to Killswitch Engage after I heard my favorite Saosin song and my friends found me at the Saosin stage.
After I had heard my favorite song (Lucky for me it was 3rd or 4th and the songs before it were also very loved ones for me) After that we did the long hike to stage 5 where Killswitch had just started. They pumped out an amazing set but I was surprised the pit wasn't as heavy as expected, I got more beaten around in Alexisonfire. After their set, sunburnt, dehydrated, hungry and weary we walked out of the venue picking up a free bag of stuff they were giving out and got home.

The sunburn took 3 weeks to heal properly with many blisters (I had the Mindless Self Indulgence sideshow to go to, 2 days after Sounwave if I can recall and Matt from Madina Lake I was talking to couldn't believe how horribly sunny it was)

Overall, the bands were fantastic, the organizing was not. Next Soundwave, Shade tents, better placed taps, free copies of maps and please have stages marked :)
