Jack Penate @ The HiFi Bar,Melbourne (15/02/2008)
Mon 18th Feb, 2008 in Gig Reviews
Jack Penate is a born entertainer! His HiFi gig on Friday night was one hour of genuine excitement and high energy. The mostly Gen Y crowd loved every minute of it.
As the 22 year old British singer-songwriter stepped onto centre stage there was a boisterous welcoming cheer from his fans which echoed through the capacity filled venue. They were here to hear his music and witness his energetic Elvis-like unique style of dancing. What followed was a steady stream of songs from his Spits at Stars EP; ‘Spits at Stars’, ‘My Yvonne’, ‘Cold Thin Line’ and 2007 released album Matinee ; ‘Made of Codes’, ‘Run For Your Life’, ‘Have I Been A Fool’, ‘Learning Lines’, ‘We Will Be Here’, ‘Torn on The Platform’.
A surprise inclusion to the set list was Jacks cover of the Beats International 1990 hit ‘Dub Be Good To Me’ which got an arousing response from the masses. According to the Mancunians (of which there were many this evening) standing beside me, this kid is huge in the UK and I can see why. His soulful lyrics tell stories of everyday life and death, which we can all relate to.
Judging by the reaction of the crowd this evening, Jacks fan base has now grown exponentially and the word will spread fast, that there is a new talent worth paying attention to.
