As we arrived at Rundle Park I wasnt really sure what we were going to be in for. A whole bunch of DJs then the promise of Kele from the Bloc Party and the infamous white rapper Vanilla Ice. I must admit Im not really into dance music, but Vanilla Ice was an act I had to see.

The crowd was rather large considering the clash with Schutzenfest and the $70 cover charge. As we walked in it became apparent that short shorts, fleuro colours and bottled water would be the order of the day. The atmosphere was that of a mini BDO / outdoor nightclub. Half the crowd were around the bar areas drinking and chatting while the other half sweated it out on the dusty dance floor in front of the stage.

Leading up to the main acts the DJs played for what seemed like an eternity, although the dancing crowd seemed to lap it up. Personally, I dont get it, they play other artists music and their mixing was less than spectacular. I think Jet summed them up pretty well A pill popping jukebox is all that you are. Having said that, the job of the DJ is get everybody up and dancing and there was certainly plenty of that going on, so they must have been doing a pretty good job.

Then it was time for Vanilla Ice, or so we thought, 6:30 came and went and there was no sign of the rapper. Then DJ Ajax took the stage and continued the dance music trend. Rumours started to swirl about Vanilla Ice missing his flight and the possibility of a no show.

8:00 rolled around and still no sign of Vanilla Ice. Although it was time for Bloc Partys Kele to take the stage. I had pretty high expectations for his live set and I must admit I was a little disappointed. He played some great tracks from various artists including Blur, Nirvana as well as some Bloc Party originals. His DJ set was very good and the crowd responded accordingly, my only disappointment was that he didn’t do any vocals not even for his own Bloc Party tracks. The highlight for me was when he launched into Ice Ice Baby, before being shut down by the organisers, then refered to Vanilla Ice as the washed out white rapper. A little harsh I thought, but at the time he was over 2 ½ hours late, so anything went.

Finally 9:30 rolled around and Vanilla Ice was in da house. He exploded on stage amongst smoke and sparks and launched into a group of songs including how I could just kill a man. His energy and stage presence was awesome, he quickly turned it old school and the crowd went wild when the bass line from Ice Ice Baby started up. Vanilla Ice played a great range of songs including ACDCs Big Balls, Cypress Hills Hits from the Bong and Go Ninja Go (his hit from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie). Then disappointingly at 10:00 sharp the power got pulled mid song and his set was over. Despite his short 30 min set, I was totally impressed and hope that he returns to play his own show in the near future.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first!
